adding Merv 8 filter to A/C?

Today we purchased a new window air coniditioning unit for my room. I also

picked up a Merv 8 filter to add to the a/c unit... If I remember correctly I

should just cut the filter and duct tape it over the air intake grid (taking

around the edges only)but I'm a little confused. The Merv 8 filter is pleated,

should I smooth out the pleats for a better fit over the intake?... and how

often should I change the filter?
