Guest guest
Genetics: Genetic testing 17 November, 2009 Having a genetic test is a very personal decision and the decision to proceed with testing will depend on a variety of factors and life experiences. (Long article with graphs and links) http://www.nursingtimes.net/nursing-practice-clinical-research/clinical-subjects\ /genetics/genetics-genetic-testing/5008597.article Key Points: Genetic testing is just one part of the genetic counselling process. Not everyone who attends genetic services can be offered a test. Due to their technical complexity, some tests can take many months to complete and will not always identify the underlying genetic cause of an illness. The decision to undergo testing rests with the individual. The decision should be made on the basis of informed consent. The nurses role is to ensure the individual has access to and understands the information related to testing and is supported during and after the decision making process. Special considerations apply in relation to testing of children.
