Finding source of water leaks

I have had puzzle in my house since I moved here years ago of stains on ceiling

in an area of the house where there would be no water pipes running through and

where there was no sign of water coming from the attic above. Then a painter

here I was talking to and he said probably came in somewhere else and it ran to

another area because house is not level...OF COURSE! Sometimes it takes a

hundred people to figure something out. House is over 60 years old and is not

level any place, so thought I'd pass that on in case anyone has a similar

mystery. I always am looking right above area and water can come in one spot

and run across some interior structures and show up not anywhere near where it

came in at.

Discussion started with painter who was here to paint and fix an area where a

roof leak got into the mud room ceiling off of kitchen. Mudroom has it's own

roof line and area tested for mold and is none but left a 'wood tannin' stain,

brown stain of water carrying 'wood tannins', quite common. Anyway, when

getting ready to paint noticed bubbling of paint about six feet into the kitchen

and wondered why was it there, as roof over that is two flights up and that is

what he said, " water probably ran from there to here due to unlevel spaces. Of

course I will investigate area above it and under bathroom floor but solved the

mystery of staining in another area where there are no water pipes at all.

Always something new to learn in keeping house dry!
