Guest guest
Hi , I am Viola, Mom to Tammy21, Tania 18, and 13 DS AND PDD(nos). did not start acting autistic untill the age of 9 . It started out slowly his first thing he did was stare at his hands as if they were full of diamonds. is very affectionate. He is verbal. He does play with his toys as well as stim with them. 's weakest area at school is fine motor skills also is my youngest and spoiled! LOL. walked at 24 months, and was completly toilet trained by 5. is also sensitive to loud noises such as a dogs barking. He prefers to play alone, however we can engage him for awhile and he will play with us for short periods of time. suffers greatly with sensory issues, which are addressed with a large sensory diet. Brushing protical and joint compressions. 's diagnosis of PDD(nos), is because while he displayed some of the charitristics of Autism and did not have all under one the catagories. Are you close to a childrens hospital?? We had to go 2 hours away from where we lived at the time to columbus childrens hosital, which had both a down syndrome clinic, and an autism clinic. good luck hope this helps!! My son with ds is almost 4, and has developed some behaviors in the past few months which are concerning to me. All the professionals I have talked to say that he doesn't have autism, but I still wonder.... In reading back through posts, it seems like many of you have had the same experiences with professionals that have worked with your children, so I guess I'm here to listen and learn Brady has fairly delayed fine motor skills, his self-help skills are pretty delayed due to the fact that he's the baby of six and is pretty much spoiled to death - guess I need to do something about that LOL He walked at 21 months, but still can't jump and will not walk up and down stairs independently, even though I think he is capable. He will walk if we hold one hand though, and can climb up and down on his tummy and will now butt scoot down He is very bright in some areas - learns academic things very easily - abcs, colors, numbers, shapes etc.... knows over 300 signs, but he doesn't really use them very well in functional language. He loves to be around other kids, but doesn't seem to be able to break into their groups, he doesn't understand how to play the way they do. When he was a baby, he was always more interested in people and we had to teach him how to play with toys. He doesn't do imaginative play very well - he'll take animals and make their noises and make them jump or eat, but he won't play with them for long periods of time. He is sensitive to some loud noises, but not all - he hates cheering and when our dog barks a certain bark, and he just cries : ( He has some sensory stuff with foods - he doesn't like cold things, or foods that are sweet. When he was younger he loved to spin bowls and watch balls bounce on wooden floors, or down the stairs - but he has pretty much outgrown that. When he gets excited he stiffens up his whole body and says ooooh ooooh oooooh and does this weird thing with his arm. He has always sucked his tongue as a soothing thing, and he sometimes grinds his teeth. Sorry this is long - I guess what I'm trying to say is - from this stuff - do you think I should do further testing.... There aren't any developmental pediatricians in my area, or even neuropsychologists, so I don't even know WHO I would take him to for testing.... He is social, he is snuggly, he points to things, both in books, and in the environment - he doesn't fit a typical autism profile, but does that mean he's not on the spectrum? Is autism in DS different than in the typical autism population? I've tried to research it, found checklists and such, and looked at the articles on the riverbend site - but I still am unsure. In some ways, a lot of the behaviors could be sensory dysfuntion - but that goes with autism - I just want some input as to whether you experienced parents think I'm in denial If you made it this far - THANKS!! - mom to Brady almost 4 w/ds and his bunch
