Guest guest
Hi, This subject of atrophy post-fusion has come up as I've been pondering the reasons why treatments fail. I remember that while wearing the Milwaukee Brace I had many, many necessary back muscles that were not being used, despite swimming 2x per week. That's not enough exercise. Is it any wonder treatments fail and curves worsen? Is it any wonder problems occur post-surgery? While full-blown atrophy may not be the case, the lack of use of these muscles which connect to your spine surely causes them to be unable to hold corrected curves. From there anything, I suppose, can happen. If the curves are " corrected " they worsen. If rods are implanted the muscles have to pull somehow, so they cause another kind of leaning. Hence progressive scoliosis after bracing and flatback post-surgery? Sounds good anyway. At least it sounds reasonable regarding bracing. I don't know enough about the Harrington rods to to anything but guess. Either way, to treat the condition they are fighting muscles and also putting them into a position where they are forced to work unusually or not work at all. That causes strain and can cause atrophy. Gloria

Janice ==>Dear Janice, I believe Irene meant that your gallbladder would atrophy, and that your liver wouldn't be able to produce the required amount of bile for digestion. Proteins and fats stimulate the gallbladder to completely dump it's bile, and the liver uses cholesterol to make bile. Fats are digested/broken down by bile, except coconut oil which does not require bile in order to be absorbed like other fats do. I hope that helps, Bee

Some of those symptoms you mentioned were the same as mine before I was diagnosed with HSP.
