Guest guest
Diane, Perhaps the doctor is concerned about becoming addictive to the tylenol #3. Even with cutting him back he is still getting a daily dose. Maybe ask the doctor if you can switch to another type of pain medicine for a short time. I've broken my leg several times and the longest I was given pain medicine was a week and you want to know something, the pain medicine never did reach the area that was broken. :-) If you think he needs help with getting to sleep have you thought about using melatonin for awhile? I would just talk to the doctor and see why he wants to discontinue the pain med and then ask for other alternatives. Actually the Ibuprofen did better for pain than the tylenol #3 did for me. This is just my opinion so take with a grain of salt. :-) Carol Trishasmom She isn't Typical, She's Trisha!
Guest guest
It's been a week and a half since Greyson (7) broke his leg and DH and DD took him back today for a checkup. (I stayed home and did some much needed catch-up with homeschool/chores with the rest of the kids.) Well, Greyson's leg is still not completely aligned, in fact --- it's shifted even more than it did last week. He has another appt next Wed to see if it's moved any more. If it has, we're looking at surgery and pins. Darn. Of course, that piece of news bothers me a great deal --- along with something else that bothers me --- and that's what the doctor told us about the pain medication. Could I have a little input on this ya'll ------ ? He's wanting to cut Greyson completely off the prescription pain medication. Greyson was given morphine in the hospital, and that along with the later combination of the anesthetic, ibuprophen, and Tylenol #3 all together kept him Extremely comfortable! In fact, he was a little too comfortable if you know what I mean. At home, we use the ibuprophen every 6 hours along with the pain medication Tylenol #3. Right now, he gets the pain med (down from 2 t to 1 t) only twice a day --- every 12 hrs; once in the morning and once at night. He still cries first thing in the morning with his leg, (when we change him/move him/etc) but then he manages pretty well thru-out the rest of the day when we continue to give him the ibuprophen. In the evening, I give him just enough to help him (and therefore me, too!) sleep thru the nite --- which he's able to do now. I thought we were doing pretty good at cutting back being only 12 days out from the injury. I still do. At first, it was 2t every 4 hours! Twice a day isn't bad to me if he needs it and it's not like he's drugged or anything. (I broke my toe one year and I was STILL hurting 6 weeks after, and that was just a toe!) The biggest problem is that Greyson is still pretty much non-verbal and I can't tell for sure HOW much he's hurting. I just wish he could tell me! He has occasionally used the sign for 'hurt'; but mostly I gather his pain level from his behavior and his crying --- and he seems to have a pretty high tolerance for pain. It's certainly not my intention to create a little junkie; but dang! With the kid of injury Greyson suffered, combined with his autism and him being such a sensory kid and all --- well, I would rather err on the side of caution than not when it's my 7 yr old Down Syndrome/Autistic son!! I hate it when we've waited too long for his medication and he ends up crying! (Which has happened) I don't have a 'cut-off' date for the medicine; I'm just trying to follow Greyson's lead here. I would like to call the doctor's office tomorrow and share my thoughts with them. I mean, DH did a pretty good job of it today but I think I probably coulda done a little better. (That's when I wish I HAD gone!) But in the end, even with DH, the doctor was still against keeping him on the pain medicine any longer. So, do any of ya'll have similar experience in a situation like this? How did ya'll handle it? How can I best explain what I've tried to say to ya'll --- to our doctor? Bottom line is that I want to do right by my child and I only want to give him pain medication if/when he needs regardless of the doctor's standards. I want to use Greyson's standards --- and I promise I'll cut him off when I think he's had enough ----- !! Thanks in advance ya'll! Blessings--- Diane

Diane, Good idea to call and have the discussion with your doc. And do it pronto. But as for the Tylenol, maybe he's thinking that this is going to be a long haul for Greyson, and I do know that prolonged use of it is not good. Try and get a clear answer on the doctor's reasoning, and if he has a good one, ask him what you are supposed to do to help alleviate your baby's pain???? BTW, sorry about the added surgery and pins!!!! Keep your eye on the light at the end of the tunnel; it's there somewhere!!!!! Guest guest
you are greyson's mom and you know him better than any docotor does. If you think or see pain by his behaviors, and moods then treat accordingly, pain is indivdidual and no doctor can tellanyone weather they are in pain or not just becasue they are nonverbal. I think the doc needs info on pain and the nonverbal. IF he is crying and grimacing, bracing the leg, avoiding using it etc, plus behaviors he is definately in pain and you as his mom or parents are the ones who can tell something not right, stick with your gut!! shawna Question > It's been a week and a half since Greyson (7) broke his leg and DH and DD > took him back today for a checkup.
