Guest guest
An Interview with Jordan, Beta Glucan Expert and U.S. Patent Co-Inventor in Beta Glucan Research I have watched Doug Kauffmann for years. (Know the Cause) He has had Jordan on who has a company called NSC. One of his products is beta glucan. It helps the immune system. If you google any topic related to beta glucan, you will get the information above for a more indepth article Kathi > > ive wondered about this as well. it also helps stimulate release of stem cells from bone marrow.. Guest guest
I have bit my tongue long enough. 1,3-beta-D-glucan is a cell wall polysaccharide shed by fungi into the indoor environment. The compound causes adverse pro-inflammatory response in humans and animals by binding to DEC1 and DEC2 receptors. There is plenty of information in the literature regarding its adverse health effects. We even discussed this in the POA paper listed on ACHEMMIC and Policyholders of America web sites. If you want to take this potentially dangerous compound that is prepared from fungi and mushrooms it is your business. Just how pure is the preparation and have all of the exotoxins and endotoxins associated with fungal cell walls been removed? Contusing to post this information may well lead one down the wrong path of treatment. Guest guest
Dr Thrasher, I have my own little theory that people " feel better " when they take this, (or Kombucha, & other mushrooms) because their immune system (whole system) & is in hyper overdrive trying to detox from it. Do you think that could be it? I took Kombucha when I first got really bad around perfume. It caused some sort of microbial growth in my nostrils & around my nose & it returns upon big or prolonged exposures. I just painted OUTSIDE (Do It Best brand Low VOC) & it's starting up now. --- In , " Jack Thrasher, Ph.D. " <toxicologist1@...> wrote: > > I have bit my tongue long enough. 1,3-beta-D-glucan is a cell wall polysaccharide shed by fungi into the indoor environment. Guest guest
Hi Carl, When I was being exposed to mold, I could not eat anything fermented like cheeses, vinegar, wine and etc. I could not eat mushrooms either. I had to read labels constantly. Each time I ingested something fermented, I would get sicker. Now that I am no longer exposed to mold, I can enjoy some of those foods that I could not eat before. It took me approx a year before I got to feeling better and approx 2 years before I felt all the way better. Before, I could not work or lead a normal life. Now I am working again and doing fine. Getting the head and lungs cleared took some aggressive treatments. I had to take other treatments as well and I am thankful for feeling better. Anyway, what might be good for one illness might not be good for all illnesses. These days I mop my floors with vinegar where as when being exposed to mold, I could not handle using vinegar. Some people can use vinegar while being exposed to mold and to others, it can throw them backwards. I am in 100% agreement with you; the main thing is to get out of the mold ASAP. Once you get out, your body can start to heal and recover. Through it all, one needs to keep proper perspective. I know how mold will make one feel as if they are dying though and I know what it does. Even though I am feeling better, I still have nodules on my lungs which I have to get an x-ray for every year. At first I had to get a cat scan every 3 months, then every 6 months and now I am down to an x-ray every year. I moved several times before I actually found a place that was not contaminated with mold. We had to buy a new home. It took me years before I understood that it was the kind of houses that I lived in which were making me sick. By the time I realized it, I was sick and could not work so it was hard leaving the mold. I know and understand how one can freak out over a mold spore though, I have been there. It has been less than 3 years since I left the moldy house. It has only been recently that I started feeling well enough to go back to work. A few lingering mold spores will not kill us. It is remaining in the sick building which might take us in the long run. Even though I threw out things and washed and disinfected every thing I bought into my home, I am sure a few spores may have followed me but we can't stress on a few spores. The only thing we need to stress is getting out of that nasty building. J <SNIP> Stopping the exposure by whatever means possible is the key. The quicker the better. > > If we don't keep proper perspective we risk worrying ourselves to death. If we don't apply some discrimination we will be guilty of " microbial profiling. " Which is worse than racial, sexual, or religious profiling because we make ourselves the (unnecessary) victim. > > > Carl Grimes > Healthy Habitats LLC > (fm my Blackberry) >
Guest guest
Thank you for this explaination Dr. Thrasher,I was biting my tongue also. I am confused by alot of the questions coming up lately. If you ladies are mold-injured and are educating yourselves about mold, why would you even consider taking a yeast/mushroom product? Its a no-brainer for me. Guest guest
Interesting theory. It is possible. Cytokines and chemokines can cause elation and/or depression according to the literature. Why stimulate the immune system anyway? Guest guest
Beta Glucan supps claim to modulate thus helping prevent an inappropriate cytokine response (assuming some cytokine responses are actually healthy) and autoimmunity. Healthy foods dont always do the trick for folks with bad digestive issues and they are hard to find in some locals. Also beta glucans are not the only supp to help modulate the immune system. But I hate to throw the baby out with the bath water if beta glucans or any other yeast based supp can actually be helpful. Im not clear on the role.. all or nthing all bad? of yeasts (and beta glucans) with HLA types. Robin --- In , " Jack Thrasher, Ph.D. " <toxicologist1@...> wrote: > > Interesting theory. Guest guest
I agree with Carl, death is a rare thing and it shouldn't be used to scare the crap out of people, stress can cause death too. I'd be very careful because there have been people that were very ill and the information given to them scared them so bad that they thought they had nothing to live for and took their own life. I wouldn't want that on my hands. and believe me, you never know how very ill, suffering people who have suffered brain damage are going to react to information they get. it's something we all have to keep in mind. as hard as it is to keep emotions out of this, it's important to do so. when I can easily pick up on stress that another board member is haveing, it becomes clear that what and how we say things does matter. I checked in last night before I went to bed and wish I hadn't of, I always kindof stresses me went people bring up trying this or that weither it's takeing inturnally or cleaning with it. I just have to set back and wonder how many keep theirself in a aggervated state or even possably make theirself worse off by things they try. I had horrable reactions to any mold derived med's after my exposure, and it only took once eating a mushroom gravy and haveing my body freeze up and than throwing it up to convience me to stay away from anything haveing to do with fungus. I used to have a bad reaction to any yeast type bread. I think that after exposure the best one can do to get somewhere clean enough to fell better and go on a strick white meat and greens diet. filtered water. live like your extremely poor, get rid of all house hold cleaners, scented products, chemicals, weither you know you are reactive to them or not. your just not going to even be able to tell until your body has had time to calm down from a constant reactive state and when all those symptoms seperate out is a good indacation that your doing something right. unscented soaps and water is all I can tolerate so my choises were made for me. from where I was, I'm doing much better now. you have to pay very close attn. to your body and your reactions. I always thought everyone was a immediate reactor, I guess not, I am, both immediate and delayed. but everybody does have immediate brain fog, I'm assumeing, with re-exposures ? I think the big trick is letting your body guide you, but first you have to get the constant reactive state to stop, than you start learning by paying very close attn to when you react, how you react and what you smell or know was around that might have caused the reaction. when in doubt, it might be several things together, so just mark that on your list of places to advoid for a while. it's not easy at all, it doesn't matter who says, " I'm reactive to this or that " it's matters what you are reactive to. but there are several things that most of us have problems with around. for a good 6 years at least I avoided most stores like the plague. I still cannot bring myself to try going back into a shoe store. I just went the walmart for the first time in many years, kmart is still off my list, size and air quaility matter. staples just wiped me out but I had to go there not to long ago and was suprized that I could tolerate up in the front part but the minute I ventured to go further in, I knew instanly that I couldn't do that. my daughters did most of my grocery shoping the first few years but now I usually have to, sometimes it goes well, sometimes not so well. I know if I walk into a store and smell lysol or other cleaning products, I better get out while I still can. hits me instantly and my legs turn to mush right along with my brain and I know these things can affect me so bad that my voice becomes instantly slurred and proceeds to where I cant hardly manage to talk. this is one reason why I wont go to a hospital when in this shape, it can quickly bring on re-accureing meningitis, but no.1 this hospital here just wipes me out. no.2 if I cant talk to tell them whats going on, they aren't touching me. no.3 if I cant function well enough to make sure they dont give me something that might hurt me worse, I aint going, period. I really wish I had a doctor that was on top of all of this because if something ever happens and I get took to a hospital and they dont know whats going on here, it could be bad. I had some pretty strange things happen ,like while being exposed and haveing hisderictomy I woke up in the middle of the sergery. what ever they gave me during my cataract sergery, there was a few seconds where I was aware that he was useing that machine on my eye and heard him comment on how hard the cataracts was. I dont want to come to in the middle of surgery again. that can be quite painful and/or a little freaky. I cant speak for anyone else but I fell like the more you can avoid the better. and if that means liveing like a hermit for several years, thats what you have to do. while I do understand that everybody is looking for a cure, I just dont think its good to be putting much of anything into your body, IF YOU DONT HAVE TO. SAME GOES FOR BREATHING! the lesser the better, if your in a big smoggy city, try small towm liveing, country liveing, ect. all that pollution in a big city isn't going to help you. on the other hand, timber can and does get quite moldy in some places at certain times of the year, some areas worse than others. as I figured, with my sinus problems, sand and very dry air is not what I can tolerate. I cant stand to be in a house where food is being fried, the greese get's to my lungs, sinuses and brain, I can eat it some now but it used to make my stomach go wild. but the smell is still something I cant tolerate. please, just try soap and water first, for cleaning, if it doesn't do the job than consider, whatever. but for those newly exposed, always keep in mind that your body is screaming at you to to stop the exposures, that might mean the shampoo you are useing, or the neighbors drier vent blowing toward your window, or the trash bin not to far away, something you ate, ect. you really have to play detective. and as hard as it is, you really do need to read up on anything before putting it in your body. I wouldn't even take someone elses word for anything, because what they can tolerate and what you can tolerate might be to different things. and everyone needs to think about this, exspecially those freshly out of a WDB. not everything is going to cause a real noticeable reaction, it might cause a delayed reaction, it might be a mild reaction and your body is still suffering so you might not make the connection. so really, and I do understand that many have kids and spouces and that can make it harder if they go to school and/or work and bring home smells on their closes, you have to set up some very strict ground rules that everyone has to follow. my daughters and grandkids pretty well know by now that if they show up and want to hang out they are going to have to take a shower and wear some of my cloths while we wash theirs, or set outside if they aren't staying long. many times they thought they didn't smell but I've had to chase them out the door, I get upset went my space air gets contaminated cause it lingers and sometimes opening the windows is worse than suffering. my daughter and granddaughter spent the night last night, showers, washing their cloths and they left their bags out on the porch. they are learning. I dont think they really realize that my mood changes are more because of the exposure than me just getting aggervated with them, it's hard for people to get that things I breath can cause my mood to change very quickly and sometimes it's just not a pleasant mood at all. you really have to learn to think of everything and you cant do that when your constantly reactive, it's hard for me to do still, it's took me many years to get to this point. alot of things I only learned after it was basicly beat into my brain by experienceing or reading it over and over again. it fells good to know if you help even one single person to not have to learn things the hard way, but we do have to be careful about what gets posted and remeber that most are not up to reading every post. if they only read a post that says take beta gluten, that could be very harmful to them. and we have to remeber that posts can be interpited wrong. ok, I had my say, wore out now. sorry for the long post. Guest guest
I think the key to Dr Thrasher's response is this: " Just how pure is the preparation and have all of the exotoxins and endotoxins associated with fungal cell walls been removed? " > > If you're health has been affected by WDB, your body is struggling to get rid of mycotoxins, endotoxins, etc. so why take the chance of ingesting something that may have these in concentrated amounts? How would manufacturer be sure to remove or separate out the associated toxins? It's possible the presence of toxins can excite the immune system, as it tries to get rid of them, and can be misconstrued as hyping it up in a positive way rather than evidence of body trying to get rid of toxins that are being added to your body, which would definately be a bad thing. It's possible that someone not suffering from too many toxins, but something else, may have some benefit to hyped up immune system due to concentrated toxins and kill off a virus, etc, but if your problem is too many toxins, taking more wouldn't make sense. So, we don't know, doesn't sound like a good idea but if you try it and feel better, well, that may be well for your situation, which probably means you aren't suffering from toxic exposure. Guest guest
Fine.:-) I really dont have time to go back and forth on it either. It *is* being used by stem cell clinics with very sick people to help raise personal stem cells in conjunction with umbilical cord stem cell therapy. One product is called Stem Kine. I hear you.. but I am also questioning you. I am asking if all beta glucans from all sources are bad and then why? Do they all contain dangerous endotoxins and are all endotoxins bad for all HLA types.. is it black and white or ar there nuances? But it seems like these questions will not be addressed here. Guest guest
Robin, I think difference in cultured products, like yogurt, Gouda cheese, cottage cheese, etc, which are okay in mold free diet recommended by late Dr Marinkovich originally, and other dairy products made by culturing because they don't contain microbes that produce toxins, unless they are contaminated, not kept clean in processing. I believe that is difference. Other cheese products are made from different microbes or mixture of microbes which may contain toxins and point is to avoid toxins mainly. > > As I questioned.. are ALL molds and ALL yeasts and I will add ALL BY PRODUCTS of mold growth from ALL molds dangerous to the HLA types? >
Guest guest
Of course that makes sense, Barb. Thank you. I am asking in addition if ALL endotoxins are bad, stressful to the system. Like are ALL molds. It makes sense we cannot avoid all molds and we can avoid the supplement, beta glucan. I am not planning to use beta glucan until I feel safe doing so and then will gauge my bodys response. Same time I am asking if all endotoxins from all beta glucans or any other mold related growth are an issue.. it makes sense to not take that chance when one is sick with a biotoxin illness... it seems to be helpful to some others with chronic illness that may or not also have biotoxin illness. Do we struggle with all endotoxins and all mycotoxins? I know of one CFSer who finds it very helpful and realize her may not have biotoxin illness. Guest guest
Thanks, Barb. I have kefir grains here. I have to leave them. I stopped using them when I realized we had a mold prob in the house. I would like to purchased more form kefirlady.com. Then we have fermented veges that create their own microbes as they ferment (break down) in salt water brine. Are these good safe microbes? Weston Price/Nourishing Tradition, The GAPS diet, Bee's Candida diet all contain ferments. Carbo specific diet prefers you start with controlled ferments like yogurt made with specific microbes as may GAPS.. cant remember.. Then if controlled microbes. which ones.. there are some yeasts in most all of them.. are these yeasts OK>. some do not naturally grow in human intestines.. and some do.. but they are all beneficial in balancing out the intestines at least for people who do not have the HLA types. Guest guest
You have to pick your diet depending on what your health status is. Bee's Candida diet is for people who have yeast problem only and are trying to get alot of other micobes into their gut. If you are immune compromised, you don't want to eat a 'microbe rich' diet so you can't take these all as healthy diets for the same group of people. They have their own specific audience. Even some probiotics capsules have a warning on them for unhealthy or for children under a certain age, because of the amount of microbes in dose, but there aren't any warnings for buttermilk or yogurt that enrich your gut flora but not with microbes of high numbers, unless one is lactose intolerant, so it's not that easy. You have to know your specific situation, or take a guess at it if you can't get help to diagnose accurately, which is where most of us are at; and then there is the problem of people having multiple health problems with perhaps conflicting needs. > > Thanks, Barb. Guest guest
I would like to point out to the members of our group, that the following posting was made by me, in January 2010, as a response to a posting by a group member who accused me on August 20,2010, of having chased her out of our group, in January, by my questioning the logic of her taking Beta-Glucans, in her January posting. As the group has had many such postings, in the last few days, by many group members, I hope that the member who took offense in January, does not take offense, again, at this time, and leave the group again. We need all the input we can get, of different points of view, as recently pointed out by Carl Grimes. I hope that the credentials of Dr. Thrasher, in his posting, below, are sufficient to satisfy the member, as to the possible, potential danger of Beta-Glucans. Swallowing Yeast-Was " Good Doctor " [My January 2010 posting] Hi Jackie, When I clicked on the link, in your posting,to " natural-immune-system.com, I was surprised to find that your doctor's " immune-boosting " formulation included " Beta-glucans " . As I have come across this phrase, many times, as a possible " causative agent " of sick building system, it seemed a little illogical to be swallowing the stuff, about which, the website www.betaglucan.org, says the folowing: Poly-branched B-1,3-(D)-Glucans are naturally occurring polysaccharides, with or without B-1,6-(D)-glucose side chains, that are integral cell wall constituents in a variety of bacteria, plants and fungi. Glucan receptors to deliver non-self derived glucan to the immune response have been identified on macrophages, dendritic cells and other cells. The Beta-1,3-(D)-glucan with Beta- 1,6-glucan linkage extracted from yeast cell wall (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) has been shown to act as a potent non-specific immune-activator. I would appreciate some detailed scientific info, from our " professional " members, as to whether any one of us should be swallowing a product EXTRACTED FROM YEAST, for it's possible benefits as an immune-booster. > > Jack-Dwayne: Thrasher, Ph.D. > Toxicologist/Immunotoxicologist/Fetaltoxicologist > www.drthrasher.org > toxicologist1@... > Off: 916-745-4703 > Cell: 575-937-1150
Guest guest
Actually I am NOT taking this product, but it was suggested that I take it by the Fibro and Fatigue Center. You give some very valid points concerning it and I think I will try to call NSC and get some information. All we can do is arm ourselves with all the information we can and go from there. Certainly our current health and present exposure make huge differences in what we can tolerate, as was presented by one listmember. I enjoyed our lively discussion. Several viewpoints were presented and we can take all the input and make our own personal decision about what we are going to do. I had always wondered myself about taking a mushroom formula and always felt a red flag concerning it. But what do I know?!?! One thing I appreciate.......is getting many viewpoints concering a particular matter. I also like that we can come back together as a group after we present differing opinions. The one thing I do know.... the mold allergy /toxicity was there all my life. So if there is a retro virus, I was one that didn't display illness until being exposed to mold. This makes me feel that the retro virus is oportunistic. But perhaps it came from an immunization from early childhood. Who knows???!!! I believe that retro viral testing for antibodies will finally give some solid evidence as to what my issues were/are. The one I took is from mushrooms. ?? > > > > Robin >
