Does anyone else's child have this condition? The more I think about and being in the heat, playing sports, etc... I don't recall him ever sweating. I want to know what I should do about this - how do I found out if he has this condition and if so, what precautions need to be taken? He's done well for his first 7 years of life, lol, but we're coming up on another hot summer in Virginia. He played soccer last year and would get red but never sweat. Any tips or info on what to do and how I know for sure, just holler. I mentioned it to his teacher and aide yesterday and they don't recall ever seeing him sweat either. I guess I need to make an appt with the Neuro ped. I know if he has it, I probably need to make some ammendments to his IEP. Hi Jayne, Yes, I'm home. Came home late Monday afternoon, and need a vacation....LOLOL My aunt was quite the challenge; Maddie is easier to deal with in a sense....I'm not kidding. It was a NIGHTMARE, but we had pockets of fun. Suffice it to say that when landing in Philly, I almost cried from relief!!!!!! ;-) Jayne, a couple of times, I took a poll on the DS listserv out of curiosity. Yes, many individuals with DS have this condition. However, I couldn't seem to find an adult with it, so I am wondering if it's something they outgrow. I don't know. I do know it's EXTREMELY serious, especially living here in Philly with the heat and humidity in summers. We have it written in Maddie's IEP that she can't be in the heat for any extended periods (all it takes for her is 20 minutes) without being in air-conditioning or water. I carry around a sprinkler bottle EVERYWHERE we go. I also wipe her down with cool rags. It's a big part of the reason she got into Melmark; Philly couldn't guarantee an air conditioned classroom. A few years ago, a 9 year old child died at Sesame Place from the condition. I cut out the article and sent in into her school, so they'd keep up their diligence. I am FIERCE about it.....telling her driver constantly, as well as teachers, therapists and aides, and family members. People think she's just getting *a little color*, or getting very tired, or sometimes they think she's sick. It hasn't happened to us in a long time, because I'm SO diligent about keeping her cool. But when it happens, I panic....she turns red as a lobster, gets real lethargic, and basically drops (and I'm not talking the wet noodle thing). If you see this with , you should immediately have it written in his IEP. It can be deadly. Donna

Excuse the expression (we are totally against pigs in this house anymore!) =) No Liz...the condition is NOT sweating. Sweating is good because it means she's regulating her body temperature according to her environment. Maddie has never ever had a bead of sweat on her body. When hot, she'll just turn beet red, and drop....heart rate changes, pressure changes (not that we've taken it; it's just obvious). It's very scary. Same here, Trisha will turn red as a beet but I don't recall seeing sweat beads on her. Heat has always been something we tend to watch for her as if she gets overheated she will get sick. Now me on the other hand I sweat just sitting still. Oh wait, as I recall those might be hot flashes. lol Carol Trishasmom She isn't Typical, She's Trisha! Guest guest
My first " mom of a dual dx " friend (a mentor) had this problem with her son and it was so severe that she actually had a grant to have a suit made for him from NASA that could control his temperature. There is something in the hypothalamus?? not sure- that is broken in some of our kids, as are so many other things. She always carried spray mister bottles; they have some with fans on them and continually sprayed him down. Anyway it is some problem in the ability to regulate body temp. As with so many other senses etc. it's like the switchboard isn't working- not making connections. How's that for a scientific description? This is something I worry about with seeing that hurricane season is on it's way. She's used to being in AC- house, car, or outside only to go in the pool or for very short periods. It's actually what I miss the most during power outages too. Take the food, take the TV...just give me my AC!! Sherry PS to Carol....it's just one looooong hot flash now LOL

Guest guest
Jayne, when was young he used to get beet red in the heat and didn’t perspire. At that time no one said anything about it and we just cooled him off when we noticed it. I can only remember a couple times of him sweating. He doesn’t perspire now but he doesn’t get that flushed in the heat either. I wonder if there are degrees of this condition. At least he doesn’t have that smelly body odor so some good in it lol. Now the feet smell is a different thing at times.
