What other resources are there to find out about safer materials? I guess

no-one here knows about roofing materials, so where else can I find out this

info?

Green Depot has a really good website and it has a few retail stores around the

country.

They sell everything for reall construction-insulation, sheetrock, etc. Plus the

guys working there are very knowledgeable.

I'm not mcs sensitive but I don't think the materials on the roof will affect

you much. The reason is that air flow in the house most interacts with the

attic in the winter and would be from inside the house into the attic and then

to outside from there. In the summer, there could be *some airflow from attic

into house but it is much, much less and should be corrected anyway, since the

attic is an 'unclean' area, you should do any repairs to house that allows air

to flow from attic into house.

Air sealing the house, if it's old house, repairing any cracks to plaster and

other gaps and holes; if it has drywall, sealing up any holes made into drywall

for electrical outlets and light fixtures, etc.

The reason there is less air flow from attic to house in one season or another

is due to temperature change. Air flow direction is from hot area to a cold

area always, so in the winter the temperature difference between the outside

(affecting roof and attic) could be zero to 70 degrees inside or a 70 degree

difference. In the summer or warm areas of the country, the temperature

difference between the outside and inside is likely to be at most 90-100 degrees

and inside 70-75 degrees so 20-25 degrees at its worse.

You might want the fire retardancy of roofing materials because the roof and

inside attic can get quite hot in summer and you want fire protection.

Increasing the insulation and air tightness between the attic and the inside of

house is the way to go.

There is more info as to air movement inside house at " Air Sealers of America " .

I think that is name.

In the diagram, one side of the house is winter, and one side is summer. Note

on winter side, air movement is up and out roof; and in summer, from outside

through roof down into house.

Also most importantly air coming down into house from attic will be air coming

through vents or gaps in roof, rather than THROUGH roofing material, because air

will be taking route of less resistence.
