Elie answered, " No music, no guitars, stay home . " " We call this his Obsessive Negativity. It is another label.>> Hi, Everyone......Sara....ditto with Gareth on the new label...OND....I like that!!! Gareth and Elie are definitely two of a kind!!! He refuses to do anything if it involves leaving the house, but once we get him there, he has a great time and enjoys it!!! Gareth and his Dad did go to the movies yesterday to see 'Capinjack'....as G says it... (Pirates of the Car. 2) .....first movie he has WILLINGLY gone to see in years. It was G's idea to go and he said he liked it. Jayne....it WILL get better!!! Donnell....welcome to the group. I've been busy this week and just wanted to respond to your post. Where do you live and how old is DJ? Here's a good place to start for info on dual dx. to give to teachers, Drs, etc. _http://disabilitysolutions.org/pdf/3-5-6.pdf_ (http://disabilitysolutions.org/pdf/3-5-6.pdf) My son is 18 and one of the main problems throughout his school years has been addressing the autism problems to make learning successful. There was a period when loud noises affected him, the lights bothered him, etc. Allowing DJ to stim all day because he doesn't want to do anything is probably the reason he doesn't have any 'negative' behaviors at school....they don't force the issue of learning!!! I am not saying he will have negative behaviors but " lets not rock his boat' attitude is an easy cop out for the district. What can he do at home academically? ........Welcome to the group, also. I like the name......Keir.. There are a few from England who chime in occasionally. I think one of the moms was trying to get a site started for the English families a while ago. We have families from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.....although they don't chime in often. Take care, Everyone. Guest guest
Hi all, thanks for the welcome. Someone asked me for more details of Keir - he is 5 in October and has been driving me mad today! Have initiated a referral to a child mental health team for assessment now - so time will tell. Not sure whether Keir has ASD or I just have difficulty managing him at times. He can self-stimulate for hours with rag dolls, he is delayed in his language - is just attemping to speak - has between 30-50 words - unintelligble to others but in context I can usually make them out - but mainly at the moment it is the fact that on days like today he can moan, scream, and whine for England! Tantrums? Playing up? strategies to get something? I don't know. It is beginning to feel as if the screaming is getting the upper hand and is dominating our lives. If I ask him anything that he doesnt want or doesnt want to do he screams rather than says no. He has a younger brother who is coming up to 3 and for the first time I am beginning to worry about the impact on him too. (have always felt reassured by their relationship which seems pretty 'normal' some affection, some laughs, a fair amount of tormenting of each other etc). Anyway - just wanted to say thanks to those of you who replied to my post and say I find the site very useful (although rather hard to navigate) > > <<As we left he was raving about " Love music, great guitars. Guest guest
Even if your almost 3 initially imitates your older child, don't panic. Over the years I have had over 50 foster kids with Elie. While initially they imitate his most annoyiing behaviors, as they mature, they see that his behavior is not getting them what THEY want. Thus it becomes a negative and they just drop it. I have had NO typical child follow Elie's behavior for longer than a few weeks. It just goes away because the behavior is not fed. And eventually, Keir will follow his younger brother and may imitate some of his more typical behavior! What a boon for Mama. BTW - we are going to a concert in the park tomorrow. In preparing Elie, I told him we would have his favorite supper in the park - response was PURE OND - no park, no music, no supper!!!! Sara - Choose to make lemonade, not complain about the lemons. > >Reply-To: >To: >Subject: Re: Sara/Jayne/Donnell/ >Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2006 23:17:51 -0000 > >Hi all, > >thanks for the welcome.
