Guest guest
if he's getting a star band that sounds about right for the price. it's higher if the insurance covers it. i know orthomerica gave us a discount if we were paying but luckily for us our insurance paid. and send pics when he gets his band. kathy --- In Plagiocephaly , " " <saiken2003@y...> wrote: > > > Hi , > Welcome to the group. Guest guest
Hi Kim, Welcome to the group. You didn't do anything wrong!! My plagio baby was my 5th child and like you I never heard of plagio before. How are we supposed to prevent a condition that we don't even know exists? If you need to place blame, blame your maternity ward nurses and your pediatrician. They are the ones that should be educating parents about plagio. The only thing that matters now, is that you're doing something about 's plagio!!! Guest guest
Hi Kim, Welcome to the group! Don't blame yourself, I would say that most of our members had never heard of this condition before. I know that it wasn't in my " What to expect... " books. Where are you going for treatment? Guest guest
Hello Kim and welcome to our group. First of all, and more importantly, IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT!!! YOU DID NOTHING WRONG!!! Since the American Association of Pediatrics recommended that babies are put to sleep on their backs (to prevent SIDS), the occurrence of plagio has skyrocket to 1 in every 50 babies or so but, of course, no one tells you about this. Also, parents are bombarded with advertising that show products that would make our life easier since this products are " ideal " to keep babies off their tummies, for example bouncy seats, wich my twins used almost 24-7 until Ignacio was diagnosed. Im also a first time mom of twins and one of them was born with tort and plagio, both caused by in uterus constraint. Even though we brought his funny head shape up while he was still at NICU, they told us that this was very normal and that it would correct on its own. The doctors never mentioned that we should try to keep him off the flat spot and his tort went undiagnosed for at least two and a half months. So, of course, his plagio got worse and he was banded for 5 and a half months. Now, after the fact, I know some things that I could have done to prevent, or at least, minimize his plagio but all these things I have learned them while being a member of this wonderful group and during Ignacio's treatment. I dont know where you live, but here all doctors (except the one that gave us the referral for the band) told us the " it will round on its own speech " and even some of them expressed their concerns that the band treatment would affect our baby. Even one of them, who was the neurosurgeon, told us that with the band we would get the result of " blistering " our baby's skin and that we would get no correction whatsoever... Encouraging, right? Well, now that Ignacio has finished his treatment I can tell you that we are very please with the results we got... and we didnt get a 100% correction or something close to it. Ignacio's assymetric measures are still consider in the normal side but borderline. But, the therapists that worked with hin told us about this possibility since DAY 1 so I cant tell you that the results got us by surprise. Anyway, his head shape looks remarkable well compared to the beginning of treatment and all the facial assymetry is gone. As for the family... I know what you mean. Even though my family was very understanding and supportive, I cannot tell you how many times I've heard that some other child was born with plagio and his head corrected itself... that instead of the band I should have tried to put a sock or soemthing to cover his head and " pressure it " to a round form, etc. Now, all of them are in awe about how much his head shape has improved and manifest that the treatment was great. So just hang in there and you'll see you will not regret the decision to band your daughter. Guest guest
Kim, Don't blame yourself! You didn't do anything wrong. We all have had feelings of guilt, but the fact is there are many contributing factors to plagio and the important thing is that it was diagnosed and you are getting treatment. As for your family, you are the mommy, you know in your heart what is right for your daughter and don't let anyone tell you different. You are doing a wonderful thing for your daughter and you will not regret it. Please let us know how 's fitting goes on Monday and if you have any questions. Guest guest
My daughter wore a STARband from age 9 to 12 months. We are in missouri. She is my 3rd child and I had never heard of plagio. You did nothing wrong. Just know that you are a great mom. My dad told me how horrible it was that I was banding her but everyone else was for the band. Yes it hurt my feelings that my dad wasn't supportive but I knew I was doing the right thing for my daughter. Just follow your mommy instincts. Jenna was born with her plagio and it got worse as time went on. I knew for us the band was our only option for her to receive the correction we desired. She has pictures under Jenna in the before and afters as well as the other photos. Where are you located. Maybe someone in the group is in your area. please keep us posted. Guest guest
Hi Kim, welcome to the group. Plagio isn't something you can prevent if you've never heard of it, which is not your fault at all. There is defnitely an issue w/plagio education all around the world! You can't always prevent it anyway, even if you are educated on the subject. It's certainly more difficult when you don't have a good support system. Guest guest
Hi , Welcome to the " My ped told me it would pop out. " club. There are many, many members of this club, including me and my daughter Sophia, who is 10 months old and was fitted with a DOC band last week for Brachycephaly. It's good your child has plagiocephaly, it is easier and quicker to correct, especially at this age. Good luck, you will see good results. -Monika Mom to Sophia, DOC band, 10 months, Brachy > > > Thank you. That is encouraging news that your daughter significantly > improved starting at 19 months! Guest guest
Stacey--- You are not alone--we have been told the same by our ped. My sweetie's head has gotten better as her torticollis has improved, but it is still not " normal " . We are seeing a pediatric plastic surgeon, but are going to Cranial Tech. for a second opinion next week. My daughter is 8 mos. and still isn't in her band yet. Hers is mild to moderate, but I know how you feel about things progressing so far without you really knowing what was happening. My daughter's facial asymmetry wasn't really pointed out to me until about 3 weeks ago. Looking back at pictures it is so evident, but we didn't see it . . . Guest guest
, You can still receive excellent correction at this age, the docs need to prepare you ahead of time that you may not get a total fix when you start later. Check out the pictures section here and you will see many babies that started at this age and later who received wonderful correction. The most important thing to do is follow the orthotists orders and I'm sure in no time you will be posting progress pictures of your own. Guest guest
, Many people on here were told the same thing that it would correct on its own. Also this is not true in evey case, I was told it could take 4-6 months or longer because of being older with my daughter. And she graduated after three months.
