Guest guest
Hi Dawn- Want to at least say welcome and thank you for asking a great question here. Money is always an issue with me so any way to reduce costs is a wonderful thing...lol... In my experience with probiotics, I feel fortunate that there are a zillion options available in the marketplace today. Refrigerated vs non refrigerated. A bunch of strains vs few or single strain. Targeted or non targeted. FOS or Non FOS. And which one I am taking usually depends upon what I am trying to do with my gut. When first dx with CFIDS and MCS, I started using a probiotic similar to your Seroyal HMF Forte formula except it had a few extra strains. And as I progressed with cleaning up my gut, it was like the expression peeling the layers of an onion. Regular on ongoing CDSA's helped us keep up with what was going on with my gut so when we found a bug, or that I was low on lacto or bifo, or my immune system needed a boost...my enviro doc would change around w/different probiotics. I remember at one point I could not seem to recolonize my gut so she figured out that the probiotics I was taking weren't actually reaching the gut. So she changed me to a pricey probiotic that was only one strain but known to be resistant to stomach acid and voila, a few months later it had worked. I do not use probiotics with FOS or inulin. And with my supplements in general, I also try and avoid typical fillers such as magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, silica. My poor body has enough to deal with thus for me, I try and avoid anything additional that I send down the digestive track. Most of the quality supplements I use are very pricey. My glutathione product alone is more than $100 per canister. And since my budget is so tight, I find supplements where I can make cost reducing compromises such as a taking a lower dose, or buying a less reduced form. But one of the supplements that I will not compromise on is a quality probiotic cause after all, so much of the immune system as well as other parts of the body are so effected by the condition of my gut. That all said, in reading about the Seroyal HMF Forte it appears that these are the ingredients in each cap: Lactobacillus acidophilus (CUL-60 & CUL-21) 6 billion CFU Bifidobacterium bifidum (CUL-20) 1 billion CFU Bifidobacterium lactis (CUL-34) 1 billion CFU Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) 200 mg Other ingredients: Hypromellose, silica, magnesium stearate I am not sure why your doc may be suggesting this particular strain combination and would never overide a medical recommendation. What I would suggest is perhaps you may consider exploring some of the quality supplement distributors that many of us health challenged folks use and search their listing of probiotics. From that point forward, scroll through each list of product ingredients to locate those products with the same/similar formulation to your Seroyal in the affordable price range you are seeking. And then of course, consult with the doc to get a yes/no on whether it might be a suitable substitute for your particular situation. I also fluctuate w/the frequency of probiotics depending upon what's going on. Once my leaky gut was finally healed, then it was easier to keep it recolonized. Thus my probiotic costs reduced. Right now, my norm is 1-3 caps per week and if I take any more than that, I get the black burning probiotic diarrhea thing that tells me to back down. But a few years ago while going through horrific dental/mouth surgery, my body could not get enough probiotics. So see it really just depends upon what is going on with my body and what support my gut needs to do it's job for me. I guess what I am trying to say is as you progress with your path to wellness, you also may find yourself titrating doses that may help with the cost end of things. The intital costs can seem daunting but may eventually start to level out so hope you hang in there! Welcome again!
