Guest guest
I think so...I run lots and lots of water from the tap at a pretty good pressure, and by the 2nd day start using a fork to separate well. What you are doing sounds easier though. I think I've been spending way more time than others are on the rinsing/draining, or they wouldn't have time to care for all the sprouts they are producing. And I'm using up too much water. Dona > > Something else I thought of also. Do you use enough water to really cool > them down?
Guest guest
, thanks for the input. I just started a new batch soaking with bottled water. I'm really hoping that is the problem. All the reading I've been doing on this forum has made me even more excited about sprouting. Guest guest
Lucy, Perhaps you are putting too much seed into your Easy Sprout sprouters. They are designed to drain with very little help. On the Sprout People video you see Gill shaking and shaking it. I have found that that is really not necessary. Hold the sprouter at a slight angle for a couple of minutes and the water will drain out. I never put more that two tablespoons of seed in a cup at one time. I have found that over crowding the seeds cause lots of problems. I have 10 cups, and am very happy with them. ew Re: Sprouts Turn Brown UPDATE Dona, I have 3 Easy Sprout containers and only use them when all my other kinds are full. Guest guest
I am surprised. I would have thought that soak water would be sort of like compost tea and could be used on plants that are growing outside. I have been throwing mine away but I just started to save things in a can for composting. I am dreading putting it in the Vitamix though but then it is a way to get compost on the plants and in the soil.  Is it safe to put any soak water in the can to use in compost tea? It has been going down my drain. But it is a waste of water.  I wouldn't pour it back on top of the sprouts as that would seem dirty. I use tap water for that. But water going into my Aerogardens I use distilled but that is mainly because of buildups of mineral deposits in the equipment. For my portable icemaker, we have a Britta Filter and after it does through that, we put the water in the icemaker.  What is the consensus or is there one?  Carolyn Wilkerson  To: " sproutpeople " <sproutpeople > Sent: Wednesday, May 30, 2012 12:10 PM Subject: Re: Re: Sprouts Turn Brown UPDATE  AGREED! Guest guest
Lucy, I am currently running probably my last test batch with the broccoli/Easy Sprout combo (this is my 7th - 6 failed batches). From what I've seen/read, this seems to be almost a " no brainer, " but obviously not for me. If this batch doesn't work, I'll definitely be trying some other container. Maybe I can " grow " into the Easy Sprout later if I become more knowledgeable, or with some other kind of seed. Guest guest
The difference between the compost tea and soak water, is that the compost tea is made from a plant that has already grown, so it isn't throwing off anaerobic waste or enzyme inhibitors, so it is safer. The soak water from sprouts tends to be very acidic, whereas the compost tea is quite alkaline, so it doesn't " burn " the plants. You CAN use the soak water to kill off weeds though, lol. I just poured some on a patch of poison oak that is doing its best to invade my property Sent from my iPad On May 30, 2012, at 12:59 PM, Carolyn Wilkerson wrote: > I am surprised. Guest guest
Like chewing on the outer stems of celery Like the bottom part of asparagus, the part you cut off because it's stringy and chewy. The older a plant gets, the more it build up cells made up of a chewy substance called cellulose. It's why only animals with special stomachs can digest chewy grass and why wheatgrass needs blitzing in a liquidiser to extract the contents of cells made from the chewy cellulose. Young plants are nice and tender because they haven't made enough chewy cellulose So woody is a term for older stems... like cutting the stems of roses, they get woody too Charlotte > > > > Mel > > Those are ready to eat. Guest guest
What about the sprouts themselves, if they die or we don't want them, can they be put in the compost can? Or do they have some properties that make them a negative for compost tea? Carolyn Wilkerson  To: " sproutpeople " <sproutpeople > Sent: Wednesday, May 30, 2012 1:03 PM Subject: Re: Re: Sprouts Turn Brown UPDATE  The difference between the compost tea and soak water, is that the compost tea is made from a plant that has already grown, so it isn't throwing off anaerobic waste or enzyme inhibitors, so it is safer. Guest guest
Might be nice to grow up to plants and new seeds though I would think. Just put a few on the patio or have the lady let you plant them in her garden outside. You could both have peas, she to eat and you to grow your sprouts or microgreens. Guest guest
I think the Easy Sprouter does such a good job that it is overwhelming and they look like we can't get to them and they are crammed together.   Might be better to sterilize it and then to do only 1 TB or even a couple of teaspoons at first until we get used to it. Carolyn Wilkerson  To: sproutpeople Sent: Wednesday, May 30, 2012 3:17 PM Subject: Re: Re: Sprouts Turn Brown UPDATE  Don't dump the Easy Sprouts!!!! Guest guest
, I've done all of those...multiple time, but thanks for input. I've produced six batches of brown broccoli sprouts, and I'm now on my seventh test, this time with spring water. I'm excited about sprouting, buy my patience is running very thin. I know there are some really very experienced sprouters on here... but sproutpeople are commercial growers, and maybe they've come across your very problem considering the amount they must have sprouted over the years. Guest guest
That's funny - I was just over at their site with the same thing in mind, but for some (not completely clear) reason I decided not to contact. Maybe because I've got another batch going right now. I'm kind of liking the looks of those Sprout Garden containers. I watched Melody's video showing her rinsing and draining about 5 trays in 30 seconds and had to go back and watch it again I was so amazed. But I would like to make the Easy Sprout work just out of subbornness. I will leave them a message if this batch also fails. Dona > > > > > > Don't dump the Easy Sprouts!!!! Guest guest
My only other guess could be water causing the issue....are you using tap water , or do you filter it?. It may be contaminating the seeds. Both sources of seeds mentioned are generally reputable. Sproutpeople though, from my experience is truly the cream of the crop!!!
