Maybe plant some edible flowers near the lettuces.  Most ones with edible

flowers have edible leaves, I believe I read, but check it out first.

Hi.

I'm just going to go with the " front of the house planter " and put the lettuce

leaf plant in there.

One edible flower with an edible leaf is nasturtium, but only use the very small

leaves. They are slightly spicy. The bigger the leaf, the spicier it will be.

I wonder if burlap bags would be okay to plant potatoes in.

But they aren't black and that holds warmth in.  Don't know that we could put

plastic bags on them as that would keep all the water in and rot the roots and

potatoes.  I did buy a roll of landscape stuff but it isn't heavy duty.  There

is some that are for commercial farmers that is very heavy duty.  will

have to tell us how she makes her " bags " from the landscape fabric.

I grow potatoes (9 varieties of fingerlings) sweet potatoes and yams. The

fingerlings I do in " grow bags " which I make from landscape fabric that I buy at

the end of the year on clearance. Once grown, I can tip the whole bag over on to

a tarp and harvest LOADS of lovely potatoes. I do the yams and sweet potatoes

from slips which I plant in my raised beds. I even grew potatoes last year in a

patio table that I turned upside down, lined with landscape fabric, and planted

the potatoes in. Another year, I layed an old bookshelf on its side, made each

shelf section in to a " bed " and grew them in it. Funny thing is, with my

containers and odd methods, I usually end up with more yield than my father in

law, who is an accomplished gardener with ACRES of gardens, and 70 years

experience! I find that the less " normal " I try to be with gardening, the better

my success. My point being, don't be afraid to try with what you

have-containers, bags, etc. You have nothing

to lose but a few seeds and a little time. It's fun!

You will need to give them a little diluted liquid kelp. There is no food value

in the palnter mix.

Re: I met some farmers today. How fabulous

We have had winds here up to 50 miles an hour. People have broken windows and

lost garbage pails. And in the same week it hit almost 80. I'm not putting any

plants out anywhere until April. I can't put a cover that would stay on so I'm

keeping my nice little leaf lettuce in my house on a sill until this happens.

How often do I water this thing?

Thanks, Mel
