Guest guest
Are you doing your little dance on this one?   I would think so.  You didn't know that farmers were going to be there? Didn't know it was going to be about cooking with veggies?  I like that tablecloth as it matches my hand painted kitchen at our cottage in AR. I saw same type of thing here in FL where there was a community farm and a money-raising dinner I planned to attend and then something else came up that I had to do and I couldn't go. You are not in FL are you? Funny how had the same cloth or almost the same. I haven't made it over to the gardens down here. I don't know if I can get around there with my walker or scooter and can't walk a long way because of knees and the vertebrae. But I do want to go. I can see what they are doing at the right times of the year.  This had to be pretty exciting and you got several meals out of it. Makes me want a baked potato and I shouldn't eat many of them. I had sweet potato fries today from the oven not a fryer. But not home grown.   Congratulations and you have more people who will likely come by to see your growing. Do you have more of a garden besides the sprouts and microgreens and sunnies and pea shoots? Sounds like grows about all of her food. I'd have to move a little farther out of town for that. And not be in a mobile home park. it is for 55+.   I have been munching on carrots and broccoli and celery, but has dressing (eggs and milk for allergies). I just looked and not organic but better than somethjing else right now. Carolyn Wilkerson  To: sproutpeople Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2012 5:45 PM Subject: I met some farmers today. How fabulous  Hi All. Today was one of the most rewarding days I have ever spent. I was to attend my first cooking class at a community center. Never been to a cooking class before and had no idea what was what. Well, imagine my surprise when, as I approached the place, there was a sign on the door that said " Meet Your Farmer " . I said " I have a farmer " ?? I went upstairs and met the people hosting the class. I announced " Hi, I'm a sprouter " . They got all excited and I said " Want to see? " and I whipped out my Flip and you should have seen their faces when I showed them my sunnies, etc. And when I said " I keep my brassicas in the kitchen " , one of the ladies got so excited she said " Oh my god, she knows about Brassica Sprouts " . I then chatted a bit with them about my sprouting, and then the class begun. I told them all to come here and learn about sprouting. lol Of course I made a little video to share with you all. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZf42r2whAY Melody
Guest guest
I had absolutely no idea what was going to be done in that place today. Someone told me " they are giving a cooking class at the community center, do you want to go? " I said 'sure " . Didn't expect farmers, knew there would be a cook but didn't know what was going to be cooked. When I got home and unpacked everything I made the kale and swiss chard exactly like the lady did, right down to the red pepper flakes. Oh I thought the little bag was onions, NOT. They were challots. OMG, my kale and swiss chard came out divine. And I wish I had a garden. I'm in an apartment so what you see in my videos is what I got. lol Melody

Guest guest
Don't have a porch and all the neighbors grow things in their backyards and most don't speak english. This USED to be a friendly neighborhood but not anymore. People just keep to themselves. Now here's a question. I am thinking of growing this leaf lettuce in FRONT of my house on the side. There is a planter. I'll get some potting soil or use the soil that is already there. But we can't plant until at least 3 weeks from now (it might snow next week). So what do I do with these little plants until I get to plant them outside? I gather I should move them SOMEWHERE, right?? Thanks much Melody > > > I had absolutely no idea what was going to be done in that place today. > > Someone told me " they are giving a cooking class at the community center, > > do you want to go? Guest guest
I am going to plant herbs and greens by this weekend in the aerogarden, at least if I can get the other one that I am going to try to see this weekend. Think I'll call her again and just tell her I'll take it at $50. Then I can have herbs, otherwise I'll just do the baby greens or lettuces. I want tomatoes, too. Oh my, may have to find another one or buy one that is the 2 " higher or whatever it is higher. I did read about how to pinch them back so they spread out at the bottom instead of going so high. I also saw how to pollinate the tomatoes. I hadn't thought of that. Wonder if I should have shaken my little chery and grape tomatoes outside. I think there were more fruit on the one that had fruit last year in the tomato tree planter but it was higher and maybe got more wind. These two I have in a small pot at the end of the driveway.  I have had a few off them but not too many. They re sweet but skins are tough which I heard is from not enough water. Hope this does better and I do a better job. I have depended on my husband now to water them.  I wish someone would invite me to a cooking class. We are going to one on Sat. night and it is a demo and then they feed us, but this is not veggie but small plates. It is sponsored by Publix. I did take a class at the Senior Center last year and I keep meaning to call and find out who put it on as we want to invite them to give us a class at the women's group from church. It was on increasing the consumption of vegetables and they came out and cooked and we helped and cleanned and peeled if necessary and chopped, etc. and made different things. They were mostly beans and veggies. Some used blender and many were done in an electric fry pan they brought.  It was excellent. We made hummus which is best I've ever had.  I didn't like it when I tried it before but I liked the homemade, yet I haven't made it yet. Now my husband can't eat it, but I should make it for myself. I think they are from the County Extension office.  Carolyn Wilkerson  To: sproutpeople Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2012 8:05 PM Subject: Re: I met some farmers today. Guest guest
Need to start seeds inside. That is the best way so you are putting in plants. Other thing is could just try to plant after last front (hope). You can sprout the plants in your sprouter and then plant them. Why not? Leaf lettuces are easier than head lettuces. I heard broccoli is hard to grow. I do like the flavor of the broccoli sprouts. Don't know why the sprouts won't grow well later on. Good luck to you if you start that. You can also put them in peat pots and put them on the porch to harden off a bit and take in at night. Now that comes from reading, not doing. I remember a lot of what I read. LOL. Carolyn Wilkerson  To: sproutpeople Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2012 8:22 PM Subject: Re: I met some farmers today. Guest guest
Can look up container garden on youtube and there are some things there. Can also make up some hydroponic there in 5 gallon buckets with some pvc tubes down it. Can put them on porches and on decks. I sure wish I had my big deck that I used to have. used to have some land too that belonged to me while I am renting my lot here. So have to make it pretty or they will make me take it out. I may hide with putting flowers on the front sides. LOL. There are some books you could probably get at the library, too. You might check out the square foot garden too. You don't have to harden that soil as you can reach it from all 4 cornes as it is 4 x 4 x 4 x 4. It tells you the spacing too so whole sq. ft. is filled, like 1 tomato per square but I think it was 16 carrots. My veggies didn't do well in my sq. ft. garden I had over 20 years ago but the flowers did pretty well.   Carolyn Wilkerson  To: sproutpeople Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2012 8:37 PM Subject: Re: Re: I met some farmers today. Guest guest
Some things are better to actually direct sow right where you intend to grow them though. Right now I have a monster headache and can't remember what. Plus, I always as my dad what to direct plant and when to plant. Gotta love having him around for that! I'm going to order the earthboxes so I can grow lettuces and a few other things without my cats laying in the beds, among other things. Guest guest
You can put those plants out now. Lerttuce likes cold weather, but you must rig up some kind of cover at night and if expecting snow. ew Re: I met some farmers today. How fabulous Don't have a porch and all the neighbors grow things in their backyards and most don't speak english. Guest guest
Hi. I'm just going to go with the " front of the house planter " and put the lettuce leaf plant in there. Melody
Guest guest
Do you mean I can plant the leaf lettuce plants NOW, in front of my house? When it's going to snow next week?? Really? Everybody around here is saying: " We can't plant until Mother's Day " Melody
Guest guest
There is a You tube video or more than one on turning the 5 gallon buckets into hydroponic planters. Water in bottom can keep hydrated for 2 days. Fill into the PVC tube in the side of it.  I only knew of the ones sold at Lowe's. But then mentioned bakeries for their flour so that is a good place to look as they have food products in them. Probably the same at deli but do have to be careful I guess. PVC is no brainer. Need top though as I think they cut them to go inside to hold the plant medium above the water. Also put a drill hole in the side at the top of the water container. It shows it all if you haven't made one before. If you can't find it, let me know. How fabulous  My dad had plans for plain 5 gal buckets last year, and those are only like $2 each empty from the delis, etc. (ours charge for them) I've sweb the bags, but can't bring myself to pay those prices when I can get cheap buckets. Guest guest
I grow potatoes (9 varieties of fingerlings) sweet potatoes and yams. The fingerlings I do in " grow bags " which I make from landscape fabric that I buy at the end of the year on clearance. Once grown, I can tip the whole bag over on to a tarp and harvest LOADS of lovely potatoes. I do the yams and sweet potatoes from slips which I plant in my raised beds. I even grew potatoes last year in a patio table that I turned upside down, lined with landscape fabric, and planted the potatoes in. Another year, I layed an old bookshelf on its side, made each shelf section in to a " bed " and grew them in it. Funny thing is, with my containers and odd methods, I usually end up with more yield than my father in law, who is an accomplished gardener with ACRES of gardens, and 70 years experience! I find that the less " normal " I try to be with gardening, the better my success. My point being, don't be afraid to try with what you have-containers, bags, etc. You have nothing to lose but a few seeds and a little time. It's fun! > > > I had absolutely no idea what was going to be done in that place today. > > Someone told me " they are giving a cooking class at the community center, > > do you want to go? Guest guest
Fast food restaurant called Carl's Jr. (Hardees in the East) might give you a pickle bucket. The stores around me in CA. do. Burger King throws them in the dumpster, if you don't mind doing a little dumpster diving. ew Re: Re: I met some farmers today. Guest guest
Oh, I can do that. I can put the leaf lettuce in a flower pot for a few weeks and then plant them in my front of the house planter. Sounds like a plan. Melody
Guest guest
Carolyn: Thanks for all the great suggestions. Guest guest
What if I just use the soil that is already in the planter? Melody > > You will need to give them a little diluted liquid kelp. There is no food value in the palnter mix. > ew > > Re: I met some farmers today. How fabulous > > We have had winds here up to 50 miles an hour. People have broken windows and lost garbage pails. And in the same week it hit almost 80. I'm not putting any plants out anywhere until April. I can't put a cover that would stay on so I'm keeping my nice little leaf lettuce in my house on a sill until this happens. > > How often do I water this thing? > > Thanks, Mel > > --- > > >
