Guest guest
and lots of flour Carolyn Wilkerson  To: sproutpeople Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2012 9:20 PM Subject: Re: Re: I met some farmers today. How fabulous  Bakeries also get topping and fruit filling in buckets. Some even get eggs all ready to use. ew Re: Re: I met some farmers today. How fabulous There is a You tube video or more than one on turning the 5 gallon buckets into hydroponic planters. Water in bottom can keep hydrated for 2 days. Fill into the PVC tube in the side of it. I only knew of the ones sold at Lowe's. But then mentioned bakeries for their flour so that is a good place to look as they have food products in them. Probably the same at deli but do have to be careful I guess. PVC is no brainer. Need top though as I think they cut them to go inside to hold the plant medium above the water. Also put a drill hole in the side at the top of the water container. It shows it all if you haven't made one before. If you can't find it, let me know. Guest guest
Lol Lucy, my cats are strange. They rub up against me and want to eat the oranges with me, so I haven't even bothered to try. (don't ask me why the cats are so strange, but it's probably why they adopted ME!) Holly
Guest guest
Ilooked at the info on fertilizer at Aerogarden. Didn't mention liquid kelp though they do use liquid fertilizer. Say it doesn't qualify for organic exactly as it is right now. They use mineral salts and things like that and I have no idea what that does. But it is on their web site and you can look at the FAQ's and find it there. I was looking to find out if their flowers were edible, but didn't find anything that indicate they did so I sent them in email and should get back answer in a couple of days.   Carolyn Wilkerson  To: sproutpeople Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2012 9:25 PM Subject: Re: Re: I met some farmers today. How fabulous  You will need to give them a little diluted liquid kelp. There is no food value in the palnter mix. ew Re: I met some farmers today. How fabulous We have had winds here up to 50 miles an hour. People have broken windows and lost garbage pails. And in the same week it hit almost 80. I'm not putting any plants out anywhere until April. I can't put a cover that would stay on so I'm keeping my nice little leaf lettuce in my house on a sill until this happens. How often do I water this thing? Thanks, Mel ---
Guest guest
Lettuces are better than coleus as can't eat that (or I don't think you can). What about the decorative cabbages or the purple cabbage or purple broccoli? They would be later plants as they like cold I guess, but I have seen the broccoli in fall planting as flowers. Don't know if it is the same as the purple broccoli you eat or not. I think it probably is. Seems like it might come back. It lasts up into early winter but does take up space so probably not for the planter box but maybe around the bushes. Carolyn Wilkerson  To: sproutpeople Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2012 9:26 PM Subject: Re: I met some farmers today. Guest guest
Yeah everyone got to taste both the kale and the swiss chard. The shallots, well, I don't know anything about them. I think they are a cross between something and something else. Sweeter and milder than onions I would imagine. Tonight I had the rest of the kale I made last night and I made escarole. With Shallots and garlic. And I had some new thing from Gardein. Called Chipotle Lime tenders. OMG Best thing I have EVER eaten. I know, I say that about every new thing I eat. lol Melody
Guest guest
Chipotle is usually hot but a lot of people like it. I have no idea exactly what it is and I never heard of the chipotle lime tenders. I had figured that they would use the shallots to help fry up the greens  Carolyn Wilkerson  To: sproutpeople Sent: Thursday, March 29, 2012 6:46 PM Subject: Re: I met some farmers today.
