Guest guest
Good morning everyone, I'm new to sprouting and I love it! Just sprouted a zesty mix and I'm proud of myself. I'm having a problem with my broccoli seeds. I soaked them Wed and rinse and drain 2x a day but I barely have sprouts producing. Could be the weather temperature in my home, we're having very extreme hotness in Michigan and the A/C has been running a lot. I am wondering how to store my sprouts, how long do they last in the fridge, and how to determine spoilage? China > > > > Think I'd get me a window AC unit. Down here they have them for $100 and up.  Think I saw one for $88 advertised but don't think I'd want one of those. Maybe it does use more electricity but I can't handle the heat. It is about 90 now here and up a little but not over 101 and I don't do that. I was going to the pool to exercise today and my husband said, " It is really hot out there. "  It was about 91. I took a shower and decided not to go. That was about 5 or 5:30 pm. We settled down to have dinner and watching Westerns. > >  > > > > Carolyn Wilkerson > > > > > >  > > > > > > ________________________________ > > From: Melody eliz7212@ > > To: sproutpeople > > Sent: Friday, July 6, 2012 9:55 PM > > Subject: Hi everybody. Guest guest
Hi - back again after getting sidetracked to the Eat to Live group on Yahoo thanks to another sprouter here (don't remember who). I'm going to slowly work my way into that diet as I have a lot of food in my freezer not on the " approved " list of mostly fresh veggies and fruit. (Thanks to whoever mentioned E2L.) But back to the topic, I'm having good luck with the Sprout Gardens. Just finished eating a big crop of clover/radish blend. My broccoli greens are ready to harvest and beautiful on the Ziploc tray. I'm growing green pea shoots just open in a Sprout Garden, and started on baby blanket/Ziploc this morning a new batch of sunnies. Also a new brassica mix in Sprout Garden. I'm starting to feel like a " sprouter. " And these sprouts will work beautifully with E2L! Guest guest
Yes, that is what I did. I left them under cover/stacked until the shoots were about 1 " tall, then put them out in the light. I wasn't sure if these were something that should start out with some weight on them like sunnies, so I didn't this time; the sprout ratio is a little thin, but new ones are still coming up. Photo in my original KopyKat MikroFarm album: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sproutpeople/photos/album/1234660488/pic/878196258\ /view?picmode= & mode=tn & order=ordinal & start=1 & count=20 & dir=asc Dona >> > Dona, I have a question about using the round green Sproutgarden trays to do pea shoots. > > I assume you cut the baby blanket to fit the round tray and then you put the soaked peas right? Guest guest
I've been checking the growing medium, and it's not drying out REAL fast. And I've actually been spraying them, with a fairly heavy duty sprayer that can be used for solvents. It puts quite a bit of water on quickly, but not as much as with a sink sprayer. I'm kind of hovering, since it's so new to me, but I think 2 or 3xday. Dona > > Oh, one more question. How often do you water them? Once a day? Or do you check the growing medium and THEN water them? > > thanks much, Mel >
Guest guest
Hi. thanks for getting back to me. It's too hot for me to be doing this at present. I want to wait until this heat wave dies down. Then, when I do it, I'll make a video. Thanks very much. Sproutingly yours, Melody
Guest guest
I am surprised that you'd need a 50,000 BTU unit and no wonder you don't have one. That is enough for whole house. It would be so expensive. I would have thought that a 7500 BTU would have cooled the living room. But that is a really nice sized room. I wish I had more space, especially storage space. We did make a mistake of buying a 5000 BTU and it should have covered more but we had to get a bigger one. Gave the one to a neighbor or a bedroom as hers broke down. hard to know what they will handle and some models are not like others. I am one of those people who have to have the air. We turn off the living room AC at night and turn on the bedroom. Electric has been running about $130-160. Every so often it changes or goes tothe higher. Winter is is closer to $60-70 or so. We have AC on most days in the winter but we are in FL. We do have a fan in the living oom as well as usband likes the fan blowing in his face. It helps him breathe. He has COPD and CHF. Guest guest
My living room was originally 3 rooms. The landlord re-did it for his daughter over 23 years ago. When we walked in to this apartment 21 years ago, I almost lost my mind. Never saw such a big room with 8 windows. Never thought about how hard it would be to clean 8 windows, windowsills, verticals. All I saw was this BIG room. Then as you walk back you hit the kitchen and eating area, then you have the two bedrooms in the back. It's a really nice place. I have kept it exactly like it was when I moved here. But we never needed any A/C because we had never had heat waves like this. So I have adapted (and my body loves the heat because of my arthritis). And neither of us have breathing problems because we don't smoke, (thank goodness for that, or we would have an entirely different scenario because people with breathing problems NEED A/C). And I once asked an electrician if I could put a 10,000 BTU A/C in my living room and leave it running and he looked at and said " Seriously??, that sucker would burn out in no time trying to keep this place cool " And because Con Ed has pulled the power, it would not even be worth it. I see all the A/C's in my neighborhood (both central and windows) running full speed and people are coming outside wiping their foreheads. So it's not even doing what it's supposed to be doing. I don't think the powers that be in Brooklyn EVER expected this kind of weather. Melody > > > I am surprised that you'd need a 50,000 BTU unit and no wonder you don't have one. Guest guest
Hi, of course I can't find my measuring tape, THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN TOO EASY, lol. But I went to google, and googled measurements of Sproutgarden trays and they say it's 9.5 inch diameter. And I got lucky with the styrofoam cooler. The ones in the stores won't be able to have the trays fit in them. I know because I tried. The coolers I am using were given to me by a friend who bought Omaha Steaks (or Nebraska) Steaks. Some kind of frozen steaks that she bought on QVC. I took 2 of the coolers, built a system so they would lock together and I can stack as many trays as I want. And the beauty of these things is that they keep the sprouts COOL for 12 hours. Now in 100 degree weather, that is saying something. And each morning, I take out the trays, wipe down the inside of the cooler and let it dry out and breathe while I put the stackable trays on my kitchen counter and let them SPROUT during the day (of course if it's TOO hot, back into the cooler they will go along with those freezer pack things). Sprouts take a bit longer to sprout when doing this but I haven't lost a sprout yet!!! I love my round green trays. Wouldn't give them up for anything. And now I'm growing pea shoots with sure to grow mats in the Sproutgarden. Never thought I'd be doing that!!! lol, Melody > > > > Because it's going to be 110 tomorrow here in Brooklyn, I decided to > only have 3 10 x 20 trays of greens going. Guest guest
No, I only have a Droid phone. No computer and since I am nearly blind, I have a hard time vetting to a public computer. I am old and live alone and you sharing your life with me through your little vignettes with you and Alan means a lot to me. You have a generous spirit, Melodie, and I appreciate uou very much. I live at 7500 ft altotude in the Jemez Mountains in New Mexico, the southern part of the Rockies. I am 35 miles by a camino sinuoso road with sfeep 8% grades across the Rio Grande from the nearest Walmart in Santa Fe which sits in the Sangre de Cristo mountains, a totally different chain from the Rockies. They named it Blood of Christ because it glows blood red at sundown and we can see it from my hometown of Los Alamos. We have 1800 people and ONE (1) grocery store. Different life from NYC I kid you not. So I also enjoy hearing your Nrw York accent, etc Ann > ** > > > Ann: > > Do you have a tablet? Guest guest
Ann: I had no idea you were almost blind and had such a hard life. I'm happy to share any of my daily rainbows (with Alan) with you and others on this forum. I call them my rainbows because when we have happy things occurring in our lives, they are our rainbows. I believe we all need to seek our rainbows in this life. So I wish you less heat, more sprouts, and many rainbows!!! Sproutingly, lol Melody > > > > > > > ** > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi. thanks for getting back to me. It's too hot for me to be doing > > this at > > > > present. Guest guest
Dear Melody, I have lots of rainbows, too. The shopping here is LOUSY, but I am blessed to not miss it very much. I never was a high maintenance uptown lady with a beauty shop hairdo anyway and the beauty here is amazing. The air smells like pine and wild animals walk the streets by night. There are coyotes always and a few deer families have always lived around here. There is a mama cougar and her four kittens in the canyon behind my friends house on Alabama street. I tell you frankly that I am very afraid of cougars. I like house cats, but cats are sneaky bastards and pounce on their prey silent attack, and they are merciless killers. The county sent out a flyer in the utility bill to be sure to have a light on if you go outside at night because of all the bears and cougars in town. I would never challenge a bear, but they aren't so bad. They don't lay in wait; and if you don't get in between mama and her cubs they will run away. But now the forage higher up the miuntain got burnt in a forest fire and we are over run with deer looking for a bite to eat. Yesterday I saw a couple of adolescent stags pal'ing around together. They were about the size of does and had velvet antlers about a foot and a half wide. Unfortunately, with prey come the predators and we now have a large male black leopard. He is an illegal immigrant from Mexico. That is one scary dude. Spwaking of rainbows, the gorgeous light here attracts a lot of artists. We often have magnificent double rainbows and the western skies are awe inspiring. Yesterday some friends took me to Ojo Calienti and it was WONDERFUL. So my life is not horribly unhappy. I just wish I belonged to a family and I love you for sharing yours with me. Love, Ann > ** > > > Ann: > > I had no idea you were almost blind and had such a hard life. Guest guest
I am a tablet freak-I love them! I have the ipad, Nextbook and Acer, all different sizes-wonderful for reading in bed or checking email while sitting in the garden! I haven't touched my laptop in over a year! Google just released a new tablet priced at 199 that I have my eye on. You can get some of the older android based tablets at BigLots for $79 and up-they are just as good, they just have older operating systems, which doesn't hurt anything if you just want it for casual surfing or email. Most have a camera in them too! The ipod touch is simply wonderful too-I use mine as my primary camera and for making videos-it has a front and rear facing camera. I think they are about 180 these days-well worth it. > > What model did you get? What did it cost? > ew > > Re: Hi everybody. How's the sprouting going? > > Ann: > > Do you have a tablet? Guest guest
I paid $59.99 for this Cruz Velocity. From Tigerdirect.com. I am learning how to use it. I just (about 10 minutes ago) got on the internet for the first time, by standing in my doorway and someone nearby has a router. I spoke to my neighbors. They know I might be getting a signal from them. Most of them are locked. But one was unsecured. I can't tell you how long this took me to figure out how to go on the internet. I now know about wi fi connections, secure and unlocked. I did get to youtube only to find out that Android does NOT support youtube. I did go to facebook but can't figure out how to sign in. I have lots of tablet questions for you (will email you later). But funniest thing just happend. I showed the Tablet to Alan. FUNNIEST REACTION EVER Here you all go. Have a good laugh Melody

Guest guest
Melody, my 77 year old mother felt the same way-said she had a perfectly good computer, why would she need a tablet. I got her an ipad, had HER install a free wi fi modem/router that I called and requested from her internet service provider, and she was up going wi fi in no time (if you knew my mother, the concept of HER installing anything electronic would make you laugh) She had the ipad up and running in minutes, and now says she can't imagine how she ever did without it! (she lives 800 miles away from me, so I thought it would be a challenge to get her going, but it wasn't at all) YOU CAN DO THIS, and think of the fun you will have showing your neighbors and friends things on your tablet! Can't do that with a computer unless they come to you! > > Let me tell you something. Thank god I have sprouting to de-stress me. Guest guest
Just be aware that when you use someone else's wifi and it is unsecured, that it provides a means for others to get into your personal information that you haveon your tablet.  I do sometimes do that but have had problems once when I did. On your own wifi, that is different so long as you have a good password. Just be aware of that. Would be better if you knew whose you were using and got an okay but only if they gave you a password and they kept it secure. Do you know someone whose wifi you are picking up? See if they will let you use it or pay $5-10 a month for use. You can use wifi at hotels and Panera Bread, some Mc's, libraries, etc. but with the same risk. I have gone to Panera's in Michigan as can not get a phone line there as it is long distance. Same in Arkansas. I can get out on my iphone through the AT & T network which is direct. i don't know if there is any risk there or not.  Just talked to a woman where someone somehow hacked into her computer and snt ot things, including a directive to her investment company to transfer a bunch of money to a foreign account (they contacted her to see if it was legitimate) and sent info to her contacts and then deleted her contacts. I saw the message on Facebook. My iphone doesn'twork to well on Facebook. I have a G3. My husband has a Kindle Fire and can do email on that as well as have books on it. We have our scriptures on my iphone and on hi Kindle. Nice we don't have to carry heavy books to church as we are too old to carry heavy stuff. Do have to wear glasses to see the words.  Good luck with your tablet. It will be handy when you travel. Can keep in touch. Never use a debit card on line for purchases, only use credit card.  Can then cancel it and with debit they take it out of your account and you have to wait a long time to manage to get it back. My acquaintance has no clue how someone got into her computer from outside. Well, I got such a headache from trying to learn to do Tablets that I walked over to my sprout garden, looked at all the green stuff growing and just smiled. Those tablets are NOT going to get Melody!! lol lol lol Melody
