damp attic roof

Okay everyone I've been in panic mode since about 7:30AM!!! We had HEAVY

rains beginning about 2AM.

Never had a problem in our attic and we always check it about every other

month for stains or dampness. This AM my husband and I went up and found an

area on the ceiling of the roof that is damp!!!!! It isn't dripping onto

the attic floor, but I put a piece of plastic down on top of the insulation

just in case. It isn't raining hard now, but it is supposed to, off and on,

through tomorrow AM. I called one roofing company that can come to look at

it tomorrow evening.

We have never had a problem in our attic even after all the TONS of snow we

had this past winter. We have had an extremely hot and dry summer but

check the attic about every other month for any stains or dampness.

Does anyone have any suggestions what I should do until we can get it

repaired or have it replaced? The roof is about 17 yrs. old and a good quality.

My biggest concern is ,of course, the 4 letter word MOLD!!! Should I be

horribly concerned or can I relax some until I get it replaced.

Any suggestions are greatly needed!!!! Should I add a fan to dry out the

wood or just let it dry on it's own? Rain should end by morning and then

cloudy Sat. and Sun.

Thanks so much!!

Sue

I certainly don't want to wait to see it on my ceilings inside the house!!!

We have pull down steps and can stand straight all the way down the center

which has a hard wood floor. As you go to the sides it slants down of

course but you can see all of the roof with a good flashlight. Roof itself is

good hard wood and is a hip roof. One man who is in construction told me

that it may never happen again but that this rain was extreme and actually

came at us sideways. He said that the water may have gotten under just one

shingle and traveled in and under. I've still called a roofer and one is

coming tomorrow and know he will try to sell us a roof but we'll do what we

have to have a safe home!!!

>>>

How do you walk around up there? I wanted to put a walkway and people that

I talk to about it, say no reason to go up there. If there is a leak, you

will see it on your ceiling and it will be fixed from the outside. I wish I

could.

I'm not sure how to dry it out except when it stops raining it will dry on

it's own. It is higher up and damp about 10 inches down but not dripping on

the floor! I just can't wait until it stops raining so it will dry.

Thanks for your advice!!

might be a good idea to dry it out. good that you found it this soon,

hopefully getting it fixed quickly well avoid the mold problem.

if your roof is sloped it could be running down from somewhere higher

above, just make sure the hired co. does their job right.

I'd even request that they take some pictures of located problem and after

fixing it, just so you know. sometimes they just slap on some

caulking and thats not a long term fix.

Oh my gosh, no, the source of the leak should be discovered before it gets into

the ceiling. You can lay down some temporary planks, some 1 x 10s or something

similar. When I owned my house, I knew every nook and cranny of that place. I

periodically looked in the attic to make sure there were no leaks. The only

thing, of course, is not to fall off the walkway and through the ceiling. A

contractor actually did that. Fell through the ceiling and into the bathroom.

I know, that is how I feel, but I have 1k sq ft of attic floor up there, low

slung roof. I can stand up in middle only. What would I do up there to make it

walkable?

surely even a fan circulating the air up there would help, just a thought.

Barb, costly but dormers put in and windows might be a option,

would probably have to resingle roof in the process. even to pretty wide dormers

with large windows in the middle area could open it up alot, you could even have

a extra room up there.

Thanks for the ideas but the house is so much bigger than I need already Jeanine

but someone suggested I put a string of lights across top beam that I can turn

on when I go up there so I can see better to walk and then can use flashlight to

look into low parts of roof! I'll be glad when I sell it, but want to buy, not

rent something smaller bec I want to have control over where I live or short

term renting.

We actually have a floor that runs down the center of the attic so it isn't

a problem. My husband keeps to large long planks up there as well to use

to get closer to the sides. We ALWAYS go up to check every other month or so

and especially after heavy rains. This is the first time we have ever had

a problem but this was an extreme prolonged rain and was coming sideways at

times!

Totally agree. Nice to own and have control but it is a tremendous job. We

are vigilant about checking everything. My husband is a saint to put up

with my constant worries and having him checking everything all the time!!

Oh good! You're smart to check it like you do. Those sideways rains can

definitely get up under the shingles. It's fabulous to own (a house, not a

condo! :) so that you can control your space. It's also such a source of concern

and worry--the biggest responsibility, aside from kids and pets.
