You are going to have to show me where you got this information. The red sweet

potato that is called yam is from South America, probably Peru. We don't know

when it came to the USA, but historic writings tell us that sweet potatoes were

eaten by Columbus in 1492

Yams were brought from Africa by slaves. They called them yams, that's

why the white ones have that name.
