If you have 4 pieces of 4 x 4 or 4 x 6 you can make a raised bed garden.

Though that also takes new soil and canbe expensive.  You can did up a portion

of your yard and put in a garden.  You can also see about finding 5 lb buckets

at bakeries or other food suppliers and put them together to make a hydroponic

type container.  One bucket inside the other with holes in it to allow water to

drain out but to allow roots to go down into the water. Can put a PVC tube in to

pour water into the bottom too and need a drain off so it won't fill up too

much.  You can plant about anything in there.  It grows better because they

have access to the water beneath.  As long as you remember to water you don't

need the well under them.  You can put a trash can or barrel under the

downspouts for water that doesn't show up on water or sewage rates.  You can

put a drain out hose on it and hook up a hose.  You can find directions on

internet on container

gardening.

Good luck

Do you have room for a garden?

Re: Salad Spouts?

Thanks really didn't think about that part. I was mostly trying to find a way to

make our food budget stretch with both of us on disability not must to go

around. But lettuces aren't too bad so we'll try that.

Thanks. :o)

add other healthy things in. Such as spinach, lettuces, sprouted sunflower seeds

(hulled, soaked for two days, try jicama - it has a seeet wonderfull taste.

Do you have a balcony?  Or a big window that faces the south side?  If so, it

can work with container gardening.  Check out on you tube about how to create

small gardens or apartment gardens or conatiner gardens.  Melodie is in an

apartment, I believe.  She grows hers through sprouts.  But you could grow

inside if you have grow lights.  I have bought some Aerogardens for inside.  I

got 2 of them on Craig'slist.  There was another but he wanted too much for it

and they have been down right now (in price).  May be able to find one.  I

have one with lettuces in it.  I am going to put tomatoes in one.  I am going

to put potatoes in a sack and see if it will grow.  I just need to get a potato

or two that start to sprout.  Wouldn't want that in the house, but might be

able to do it on a balcony if you have a way to dump them out.

Check with the County Master Gardeners where you live to see if there are any

Community Gardens nearby.

I'm in the process of setting one up at a local Church and there are others

around me

there is one in my area.  I saw it advertised and planned to go to see it and

then lost the information. They were having a tea there.  I think I'll make

enough room in my yard to grow all we could handle.  With it here it will be

easier to water, etc.  We ran a hose to the back as well as a hose to the front

for the flowers.  We need to be a bit subtle about the veggies as I think we

are not to have veggies here, but I am going to anyway.  I think in this

economy we need to do that.  I will try to make them attractive though.  I

just want them sort of out of sight of the front.  We'll see.  I figure this

is not the best time for a garden here, but the strawberries we put in are doing

well.  Have a lovely strawberry on it.  Got a good place to keep it in partial

shade evidently and had a lot of rain.

I had wanted to go look at the community garden though to see waht they were

doing at each time of the year.  I think I will call the county extension

office and see where closest one is and just see if I can check on it.

There is one we called 3 times last year and never heard back from anyone and if

there is one thing that bugs me to no end is poor service. But I did go get the

#'s again and will try it again this year. They do 10x15 plots at the local

cemetery. And I think it's 35$ a year. So I'll keep y'all up to date.

Thanks again for all the help

First ask them if there is another garden that they know about. Next try to find

a CSA in your area. You can get a good deal on fresh produce if you join a CSA.

Re: Salad Spouts?

Well called and all of the plots are taken. They give last years folks 1st pick

so they have all been rented to last years folks.

OH well we'll figure something out.
