Mumbai: A teacher’s lack of attention about thegoings on in the class resulted

in the hospitalisation of ten studentsof a civic-run English medium school in

Mulund on Monday evening. Whilesix of them have since been discharged, four are

still underobservation.

According to an official from the -Ward, under whose jurisdictionthe school

falls, the students are from class IV of a municipal-runschool at Ghosala Road

in Mulund (West). “The incident occurred onMonday evening after a solution

brought by a student to the school wasinhaled by his friends. Soon after, some

fell unconscious, while theothers started vomiting,†informed a T-Ward

official, requestinganonymity. The students were rushed to the nearby MT Agarwal

Hospital.

Thoughit is learnt from the parents that the students are stable, four (ofwhich

one is a girl) are still under observation, while the others havebeen

discharged. However, parents were angry with the schoolauthorities, whom they

hold responsible for this incident. “It isshocking that the school authorities

did not inform the parents aboutthe incident. It was only when my wife went to

receive our son from theschool did we come to know that he has been

hospitalised,†informed aparent who did not wish to be named.

Another parent who was athospital said, “How can the teachers be so careless

and remain unawarethat a student brings something to the school and gives it to

otherstoo.â€

The Mulund police confirmed that one of the students (namecannot be disclosed as

he is minor) had brought a perfume. “It islearnt that one of the boys had

brought a perfume which was inhaled byhis other friends, after which they had to

be hospitalised,†informedPrakash Landge, senior police inspector of Mulund

police station.

However, the contents of the perfume will only be known through
