Welcome, Judy. Just so you know, if you get the dx of Autism, you child

receives more services than just a child with DS. But I fully understand how

you feel about giving the school another excuse to move her out of her inclusion

class. If she is doing ok there, they should not need to move her out because

of the dx. Tori (6 1/2) is included, but has pull-outs for certain things.

Hello everyone. My name is Judi and I am mom to two great girls. My

youngest is three (NDA). My oldest is 11 and has DS. I strongly suspect

she has a mild form of Autism so I wanted to see if I could learn from

everyone here, what kinds of behaviors dually diagnosed children with both

DS and Autism, display. I'm sort of between a rock and a hard place

because while I would like to find out and make absolutely sure that my

daughter either has it or doesn't have it, I'm also scared to know because

she's fully included in her classroom and I don't want the school using

another diagnosis as an " excuse " to remove her from her current setting. If

anyone can help shed some light for me, I'd sure appreciate it.

Thanks

There is no reason to move her educational placement if she is functioning

well there.

What some of us have found, is as our children age, school in a typical

classroom is TOOOOOO much. Too many kids, too much noise, too many demands.

IT causes our children to suffer do to their sensory needs and anxiety

issues, creating new unacceptable behavior. All of these things can impede

learning.

But there are some of us who have successfully kept our kids in regualr

educational clasroooms and found that with supports they do OK.

It all goes back to the " I " in IEP. What works for your daughter -

irrespective of her dx.

Welcome Judi, You do sound like your in a spot. I dont think your school can

move your child as long as you are making progress. Thats how it woorks in our

school district. If you do a ds/asd search youll find alot of info out there.Id

check out sensory integretation dysfunction too that may help answer alot of

questions. Hope this helps laurie

Hi Lee, welcome- it sounds like you've got your hands full. How old are your

daughters?

This is a great group that will help you find answers and laugh and cry with you

when you do (or don't:-) It's good you're looking into other possibilities while

your 5 yo is so young.

My name is Lee, and I have two sons with Down syndrome, as well as two

typical daughters. My older son, is 5, and we are in the process

of testing to see where he is on the autistic spectrum. For a long

time I thought he just had Sensory Dysfunction, but realized that with

his difficulty socializing and communication regression that we likely

have AI also. Ben is just 19 months old, no AI issues noted. I am

eager to read of other's experiences, and get to know you all.

Hello all, I'm Carmen and I too am following everyone over from RR! :) I have a son who's 11, a daughter 7, and my angel Jaemen who's 3(DS.) I have had it on my heart to adopt a child from South America with DS as my family is from Peru and my hubby's from Puerto Rico. My husband is still a little reluctant on adopting Internationally, but we've also considered doing foster care for kids with special needs...I'm interested in reading about your family here, as someday I hope and pray to have two little angel's running around my house! I'm praying it's sooner rather than later...:)

Here's a picture of my angel( I only know how to attach it:))...Thanks,Carmen from Colorado
