Guest guest
That is very sad, she should listen to you. The problem with carpet in basements is that it is often done the wrong way and moisture can get underneath the carpet and it looks " okay " to the eye. Years before I got sick from mold, I rented a basement apt. in Boston and got sick immediately and I was young and healthy then. Maybe send her some information from the group here that she could read and share with her Father. D > > I have two people who have gotten sick living in finished basements. The only two people I know who lived in finished basements. One I mentioned here a year ago or so, lost his mind. At the same time, his mother who he was living with temporarily and who lived upstairs, went in to a nursing home at same time he did, mother and son from this neat, clean looking little home she had bought about 5 years before that but had a completely finished basement, fully carpeted. Now a good friend of mine from school who is temporarily staying in someone's finished basement has gotten very sick and her doctor told her if her fever stays up to go to hospital. I mentioned to her finished basement issue but lightly as I don't have ANY information on anything, just simply that it is finished, carpeted basement and she hardly ever gets sick. I just got news today on how sick she is. She had signs of an infection and doctor put her on Bactrim and prednisone. Now she is REALLY sick and running a fever. (i.e. so probably fungal infection as prednisone makes fungal infections worse), but I doubt she will listen to me. Her father was a doctor (and I was an art major) and she's a total believer that they know what they are doing. >
Guest guest
Thanks Diane, and the person who owns the townhouse she is staying in basement of, is in a recovery mode from something to do with her spinal cord. My friend has stayed there for months while her friend is recovering from this other ailment which I wonder about. I've asked her about it but it is so hard to explained to people how many problems can develope from mold exposure and to other people you seem to be making huge leaps to conclusions without knowing much about their ailment. I sent her an email asking how she is doing and haven't heard back yet but she was running a fever this a.m., and it's just that time of year here that everything is so WET!, esp when youre talking foundations. Actually she is taking care of place while her friend is out of it for extended period due to illness herself. I mentioned Jeff May's book mentioning finished basements that can be a problem when she started having allergy trouble a couple months ago when spring started but then this spring had one of the highest pollen counts here on record so couldn't tell if it was outdoors or indoors. However I have allergies and didn't suffer. I think because I have made changes to my home, including excellent filter and leave windows closed etc so was not affected by the high count. Suggested she try to see if furnace at her friends' could take a higher MERV filter. I'm pretty sure she didn't do that either. Now she is really very sick. She probably asked her doctor and you know what most doctors think of mold causing illness, and how reliable their information is. I did suggest today that she try to think back and try to remember if she started to feel worse when she started the prednisone, because that would mean a fungal infection. I would never take prednisone for anything. > > That is very sad, she should listen to you. Guest guest
can cortisol make you worse if you have a " fungal infection " - I live in a damp moldy garage- will be moving soon. but my symptoms sound alot like your friend that lives in the basement. I have been sick for the 10 years I have been here- I wonder if I will get better when I leave? > > Thanks Diane, and the person who owns the townhouse she is staying in basement of, is in a recovery mode from something to do with her spinal cord. Guest guest
I believe that steroids are not the best choice for mold-exposed people, but I am not a doctor. What I do know is that Dr. Gray, the Benson, AZ mold specialist prescribed nebulized chromalyn sodium instead of inhaled steroids to help cut lung inflammation.... sue v >can cortisol make you worse if you have a " fungal infection " - I live in >a damp moldy garage- will be moving soon. but my symptoms sound alot >like your friend that lives in the basement. Guest guest
I really don't understand steroid or corticosteriods myself. I just remember reading multiple times that prednisone and medicines like prednisone are like throwing gas on a fire if you are sick from mold exposure. I don't know why. I have read that mold cell is very similar to humand cell so perhaps when you take steriods it is like putting the mold cells on steriods also. Drug info on Predisone says that it can make fungal infections worse so drug manufacturer knows this. It's just that fungal infection is hardly ever diagnosed as systemic infection unless you have cancer or AIDS. My friend could be living in water or moisture damaged environment and the fact that after she started on prednisone she got MUCH worse, convinces me all the more but she is STILL taking it, and still running a fever and still in bed in the finished basement. I've said what I can but I get very little back from her. If it were me, I would try going one day without prednisone to see how I feel, but then I have little confidence in doctors, based on vast amounts of experience, mostly bad, with not only my own health but other family members. I at least try my own theories out or test theories that are different than theirs, often quite successfully. I don't try to convince others though but I gave her what information I had but it was like talking to myself. I would feel guilty if I didn't at least try but I drop it when I see it's not going anywhere which so far is 100% of time I've brought it up with people. As for myself, I would never take prednisone for anything. Almost everyone I know who has ever take prednisone has felt worse than before. > > can cortisol make you worse if you have a " fungal infection " - I live in a damp moldy garage- will be moving soon. but my symptoms sound alot like your friend that lives in the basement. Guest guest
The reason steroids are not recommended for fungal infections is that they compromise the immmune system..and that is why the infection often will get worse when prescribed. Guest guest
must be other reasons too, it was like adding fire when I sprayed steroid nasal spray up in my sinuses, it set my nerves on fire, my whole face burned. it must cause some overaction of something, possably a histamine reaction and with nerve damage, not a good thing. this was a intence reaction to steroids. > > > > I really don't understand steroid or corticosteriods myself. Guest guest
you know, I think maybe the reason some fell this illness is more immune related than nerve damage related is because of the difference in peoples exposures, it is both. my nerve damage is bad enough that I fell the nerve damage is just as major or more so than the immune system. and the nasal/nerve/brain route play a major role. but I can see how others could not see it even though the same routes are involved for them because some seem to suffer less effects through this route. but it is both. > > > > > > I really don't understand steroid or corticosteriods myself.
