Guest guest
Melody - I was hoping you'd respond...not nosy at all. I haven't been to the doctor with this yet, and don't plan to unless I am unable to lower my self-tested blood sugar level within a couple of months. (I'm really resistant to going to doctors until forced, and already have a couple of conditions/diseases that I'm required to have check-ups for regularly, with specialists that wouldn't treat diabetes.) I was just planning on juicing vegetables - mainly green - once or twice a day. Do you consider that undesirable too? I just have a home test meter and my level is holding pretty steady at about 110 every morning (fasting). I'm not going to be doing any " self-treating " beyond switching to a vegetable-based diet and working at losing weight, so I figured that would be safe without a supervising doctor. My big challenge is exercise since I have emphysema. I really need someone to come to my house and literally kick my you-know-what to get on a treadmill and walk - the weather and hilly terrain make walking outside here just about impossible. I'm already taking B-12 - also because of a comment you gave to another member here. I'd be grateful for any information you feel like passing along. Thanks, Dona > > Hi there. > > I'm not being nosy, but I do know about diabetes and perhaps I can help a bit? I was in the ACCORD diabetic protocol at Cornell Medical Center. Guest guest
HI. 110 is not high if you look at only that number. Normal used to be 70 to 120. Now ...well it keeps changing but if you ask a diabetic specialist, they will tell you that fasting BS levels should be about 75 to 99 in the morning. You are not bad at all. And you are watching so that's great!! Here's the kicker. The (just as important number) is your post prandial number. That is the blood glucose reading that is taken 2 hours after you have eaten. When we eat, our blood sugar spikes a bit and then it should come back down in two hours. That's because our pancreas deliver insulin and our cells should be insulin sensitive and your numbers should not be over 145. These numbers tell us if we are insulin sensitive or insulin resistant. We want to be INSULIN SENSITIVE!!! We want the cells in our body to be sensitive to the insulin that our pancreas is producing. But these numbers change every day. It's the a1c that says it all. Now here is the good news. You don't have to go to the doctor to get an a1c test. They sell it at CVS, Walgreens, etc. It's extremely accurate. It's about $29 (some places are less). It comes with 2 tests. You have to carefully follow instructions when doing it but you'll know EXACTLY what your a1c is. I know you have emphysema (that's tough). But kudos to you for watching your diet and monitoring your blood glucose levels. You ask about juicing. I can't answer that because I don't juice myself. I never forgot what they told me at Cornell. It's too much concentration of the sugars. But you are not diabetic. I don't think a glass of juice made from vegetables would do any harm. It has lots of good stuff in it. Just make sure you get your fiber (that is so important I can't begin to tell you. People do the cleansing and fasting and all those things. I have never done this. Never even thought about it. I like balance. I eat as balanced a diet as I can. Weight loss is a slow (and thank god in my case) a steady thing. I think when one loses it too fast, one can gain it right back. I think our bodies know what's good and says Thank You to us by having us go to the bathroom on a regular basis. To me, that's the most important thing. Going to the bathroom on a regular basis and getting toxins out of our bodies. And people vary a great deal in what they can include in their diet if they do have diabetes. No one is the exact same. Various foods impact us differently. I can now eat an orange once in a while. I never would have dared doing that when my sugar used to be over 200. But in my case, losing weight helped me tremendously. I could still stand to lose a few more pounds but I don't stress over it. If I do it, I do it, if I don't then I gave it my best shot. I look okay for a gal who will turn 65 in November. Sprouting is very de-stressing for me. I look at my shelves and see my greens and I imagine all that good stuff going into my cells and cleaning out my arteries, etc. So take care, and keep us posted on how you are doing okay? Sproutingly yours, (lol) Melody > > > > Hi there. > > > > I'm not being nosy, but I do know about diabetes and perhaps I can help a bit?
