Guest guest
Since grows everything but redwoods in her home (or so it seems : - ), I thought I'd ask this question of her, but certainly others are welcome to chime in. Is there any point to growing avocado seeds for anything other than foliage? I have a bunch of seeds and was just wondering about that. Can they be grown indoors ok or should they be kept outdoors during non-winter months? I don't necessarily expect them to produce avocados although that would certainly be lovely, but I really hated to just toss the seeds. If I were to plant them outside in the ground (in addition to containers) is a possibility they'd actually grow into an avocado tree? I know I can Google all my questions, but wanted to see if there is any first-hand experience in this very knowledgeable group first! Guest guest
LOL, I dont grow redwoods or avacados. My mom and brother both do something with them-they put toothpics in the sides of it and suspend them in pots, but I don;t think either of them have ever had any luck with them. My brother does have an avacado tree, but it has been there for years. I really know nothing about how to grow them, except that they wouldn't do well here in the mountains (my brother and mother live in south Florida. You have me thinking about redwoods now though...such lovely shade they would be, lol > > Since grows everything but redwoods in her home (or so it seems : - > ), I thought I'd ask this question of her, but certainly others are welcome > to chime in. > > > > Is there any point to growing avocado seeds for anything other than foliage? > I have a bunch of seeds and was just wondering about that. Guest guest
Thea, while Im not , I would like to say my grandmother not only taught me they grow into trees, she had me grow one. My pet birds loved to play in them. From my experience they will produce eventually when they mature if they are in the right growing conditons. where I grew mine it was not. I had to bring it in during winter months and there for it did not get much light. They can grow quit big inside. During the summers we took them out just so they could grow in direct sun light, but we had some that stayed in all the time too, they just grew slower. Had to bring them in during the winter other wise they would freeze and die. Now we had a neighbor that had one of these fancy areas built into her home that was a green house only accessed from inside the home or the glass roof. The roof itself opened up completly for the summer months so it let the rain and such in but would automatically close if it got below a certain temp. Her Avacado trees did produce, but they was tiny and not many. What the cause of it was who knows, there was to many variations to consider.  Hope this helps some Want to understand the Bible better?  FREE  studies.  For more info Just ask! ________________________________ To: sproutpeople Sent: Thursday, June 7, 2012 10:43 PM Subject: RE: Growing Avocado - , et. al  Since grows everything but redwoods in her home (or so it seems : - ), I thought I'd ask this question of her, but certainly others are welcome to chime in. Guest guest
 I have seen some photos on growing avocado tree from the seed. You can probably see it on You tube. They had about 3 tooth picks in the sides and put one at the bottom to keep it from going farther into the water. Then had water in the glass touching the bottom of the seed. I believe the round part was the bottom with the pointy side up. Just have to put several out and wait until you get some roots and a shoot. Then plant. Must lke sandy soil as they grow in Florida but it is Florida avocado not he sought after Haas avocadoes. But green are good too. Don't know why the Haas are preferred. I think haas grow in Calif. and in Mexico.  One of the neighbors across a fence has some avocadoes and one has mangos.  thjey are ouside my mobil home park and unfortunately the tree branches do not extend over the fence. Have thought of going over and figure out where the house is and asking if I could have some and use my fruit picker thing on te long wood to reach some of them and then share with the people. Not quite right to just put it over the fence though it is filled with mangoes and some so high they will likely split when they drop off. I used to have agrapefruit tree and it was good, but county took ut because of a disease that didn't affect flavor but did the looks and they supported the fruit companis. So I lost a tree. In mobile home park so no compensation.  But then didn't have it fall on the house during Wilma either. Guest guest
I read something that said avocadoes could be grown ina pot and sounded like tey were surprised when the small tree gave them avocadoes. So worth a try. Might take a time to get something started though. Next time I get an avocado maybe I'll save one. They would grow where I am but don't want anything oo high here. I don't know if they would make good plants for espalier or not. They do mess up th underground sprinklers, any tree would. If I get something started, I'll plant outside eventually. Too hot inside and I do't have enough space as I'm in mobile home.  Carolyn Wilkerson  To: sproutpeople Sent: Friday, June 8, 2012 12:43 AM Subject: RE: Growing Avocado - , et. al  Since grows everything but redwoods in her home (or so it seems : - ), I thought I'd ask this question of her, but certainly others are welcome to chime in. Guest guest
No they did not, none of the ones we had ever did. We ended up having to give them away cause they grew to tall for our house.
