Even snopes probably wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole!! I've heard

more than one report and from very reliable sources that chemicals off gas

from the plastic. Anything liquid I buy like milk or OJ I bring home and pour

into a glass container. The foggy film you get on the inside of your

windows (mainly the front) is from the chemicals that leach from the plastic

dashboard. I for one have always cracked my windows when I start the AC and

heat after hearing this about 3 yrs. ago. I figure I can't get rid of it all

together but it can't hurt to open them. It will be years before they

finally tell us the truth, just like asbestos & lead paint, and then it will

be too late for so many. Same with cell phones, mold, chemicals in foods, &

cleaning products AND more.

>>>

I saw this before you posted but thought I would let it through as the

snopes.com article its not clear where the benzene is coming from and with new

car sales down, you don't know what could lead to blaming older cars but

it is on snopes.com with unclear verdict as far as I'm interpreting:

I think some do and have heard that they are working on tying to get rid of

the toxins in the plastic. As for the mold I don't know. I have heard it

is wise to leave your AC or Heat in the recycle mode not fresh air when you

turn off your car. That way the damper is closed to the outside air which

is especially important over night..during any season. Helps to keep the

humid/ damp air and pollen out of the car cabin.

Yes, we have a Hyundai and change the in cabin filter about every time we

change the oil or at least have it checked. My husband buys them at an auto

store & learned to do it himself.

I can never leave those vents open. Some people have permanentl sealed

them. Also you can get a filter for your car changed often. Google car

Yes I too close my vents.  I was riding with a friend once before I knew what

I was getting.  We were on the turnpike and he had opened the vents (FRESH

AIR)  wew it was most definately not fresh air. I could not breathe and I lost

my voice.  I have vocal cod dysfunction which is when upon exposure they swell

up.  So we closed the vent " fresh air "   TG.  LOL

Hit the recirculation button when your car is on.  Do not touch it before you

shut it off. .  Slide your vents closed.  The wheel will close the inside.

The lever will close the vent.

In this picture, your vent is on the sides, see on the right side of your

screen.    The recirculation button is above your lighter I believe.   Next

to a/c button.   side by side.

OK I'm going to ask a really stupid question-ow do you close the vents

and how do you close the dampers. I'm not mechanically minded but I can follow

instructions.

Thanks!

On your AC and Heat control button or knob there is a recycle and fresh air

mode. We usually use the recycle to keep out the outside air, pollen,

odors, etc. but every know and then especially on long rides we turn it to

fresh to refresh the inside air. Also we turn it to fresh air if it fogs up

inside. That where you find the recycle mode. Just keep it in that position

when you turn your car off for the day. Use your car manual if you have any

more problems or I'll try to help more.

I open my window to refresh the air.  If I open the recycle button I get

pollution from traffic, engine and such.  So when I go near a clean area then I

open the window, exchange the air and close the window.

That's about what we do. We open the fresh air cycle when we are out of

traffic and pollution to get some fresh air when the AC or heat is on or open

the windows.
