Guest guest
This article is using dated info, maybe from the /Osram press release. There are over 800 companies worldwide making or distributing LED lighting. Available Now. There are dozens of types, wattages, fittings, and sizes. One California company catalog lists over 200 types. They even have Dimmable ligths! That's important in the housing and office market. The most advance lights are street lights/Parking lot lights. The biggest problem for many fixtures is the conversion or retrofit, moving from flourescent to LED. the ballasts and wiring are a bit different. The first cost is high, but energy and replacement cycle costs overcome that with enourmous savings.Compare the labor to install a simple $150.00 halide, about $600 in NYC, every 2-3 years. Now, replace that halide with a LED, using 50% less energy, and lasting 3-6 times longer. The $450.00 bulb just saved you half on your electric for the next 10 years, and perhaps another 4 installation fees, around $2400.00. My math says, if I'm a facility manager, or I own light poles, or billboards, I'm replacing every light with an LED asap. The other factor, in my opinion the most important, is that they are poised to completely replace the CFL, which is likely to create an environmental legacy similar to lead paint, asbestos, and pesticides. The mercury from broken and improperly discarded CFL's is likely to become ubiquitous in our environment over the next 10 years. Just my professional prediction. Call me when it's over, and we'll talk. For now, try to afford LED's , but take your time, the competition is just heating up, and prices are predicted to drop soon, and continue to drop over the next five years. THEN, we will see the coming of the " organic " LED, called, obviously, OLED. But that is 5 or more years away from market. Until then, the LED is a brilliant solution for many lighting needs.
