Guest guest
I don't do that. I don't lay them out for 12 hours. After they are done (rinsed and drain for 4 to 5 days), I put them in a salad spinner and spin them dry. Then I put them in ziplock bags and refrigerate them. Why not give this a try? Guest guest
I don't have a salad spinner myself. I am using the Easy Sprout. When I am finished growing I drain them as good as I can, let them stay in the easy sprout for aprox. 8 more hours, then I line a colander with paper towels and put the sprouts in them, leafy sprouts I make sure to separate very well. Then I put a paper towel over them and let them sit for about another 8 hours. Then I put them in paper towel lined containers in the fridge. I have also started stirring my alfalfa and clover like I do the broccoli because it seemed they would go bad if I didn't loosen them even in the easy sprout. R. > Hello all! Guest guest
I am interested, too. I h ave never put them out on paper towels as I just ate them, picked them right out and keep on rinsing and draining so they kept moist. They are obviously getting too dried out. Maybe after draining for a little bit on a paper towel you need to put in a bag and put in the refrigerator. I'd choose plastic. now I'll look for a real expert's answer. Guest guest
I have found that if I don't take the extra measure to let them dry off, they go bad in the fridge. I also found that for me if I don't line my storage containers with paper towels to absorb moisture they go bad. With all of that said, my fridge may not be working right. I have to make sure that the containers don't touch the sides or back of the fridge or they will freeze. R. Guest guest
What lead you to drying them for 10-12 hours? They need to be kept moist, unless you are meaning to dehydrate them to make a flour with, but then they need RAPID dehydration. After harvesting, they should be kept just slightly moist. > > > Carolyn Wilkerson > > >  > > > To: sproutpeople > Sent: Monday, April 30, 2012 8:18 PM > Subject: wilted sprouts?? > > >  > Hello all! Guest guest
A salad spinner is a great way to knock the extra moisture off, but you can also wrap them in a sanitized dish towel (plain cotton, saved just for this purpose is best) Set the sprouts in the middle of the towel, then gather up the four corners together and give a little twist-step outside your front door and spin the towel around and around, as if you were pitching a baseball (good exercise and gives the neighbors something to gossip bout) You really just want to knock the moisture off of them. Personally, I start a new SMALL tray of sprouts daily, so I only have enough at any given time to consume within a day or two, then a new tray is ready to harvest, which keeps you from having them go bad. > > > Hello all! Guest guest
I do plan on getting the Oko Mini salad spinner soon. I do think that may take out the paper towels in the colander step. Guest guest
Sounds like a salad spinner is a better idea than spinning around and around out front of the house. Now most of the neighbors have gone back north, but there may be someone who sees. LOL Carolyn Wilkerson  To: sproutpeople Sent: Monday, April 30, 2012 9:03 PM Subject: Re: wilted sprouts??  A salad spinner is a great way to knock the extra moisture off, but you can also wrap them in a sanitized dish towel (plain cotton, saved just for this purpose is best) Set the sprouts in the middle of the towel, then gather up the four corners together and give a little twist-step outside your front door and spin the towel around and around, as if you were pitching a baseball (good exercise and gives the neighbors something to gossip bout) You really just want to knock the moisture off of them. Guest guest
Carolyn: I'm laughing as I read about people putting sprouts in cotton towels and spinning them around their heads outside. Wondering what the neighbors would say? I don't think my neighbors would think anything is weird. Let me tell you why. Every morning as I walk to my breakfast cafe, I pass the same chinese lady doing her Tai Chi. (Or whatever she is doing). Every single morning. I would pass her, say hi and go on my way. Well, the other day I stopped, introduced myself, asked her her name (she spoke no English but she understood me). Her name is Soon. She does this movement with her hands (as if to say " Get Outta Here " . This particular hand movement must mean something because she is doing it every day as I pass. That morning I started doing it with her. She burst out laughing. So this morning, sure as clockwork, she and I were doing the hand movements before I got to eat breakfast. She pointed to her heart and nodded as if to say " This is good for the heart " . Sounds like a plan to me. And a few years ago I came out of my house to the sound of music coming across the street. Since the people were new I just watched and sure enough a lovely chinese woman was dancing on the sidewalk in front of her house to some music. I marched across the street, introduced myself and soon we both were dancing. So I don't think if I stood in front of my house spinning a cloth over my head, anyone would think I'm weird. They would just say " Oh that's Melody " rofl. Melody > > > > > Hello all! I'm new here and just started growing alfalfa sprouts in the > > > jar method. I hope you can help me with my problem. Guest guest
Shar, Do you have a Bed, Bath & Beyond near you? They sell a brand called OXO. This is a great one. Your sprouts will not go through the holes. PS: This is the same one that Sprout People recomends. ew Re: wilted sprouts?? Guest guest
I have an easy sprout now and it seems strange as they sort of bunch up and tangle a lot. I pull them loose with a fork to lighten it up. Haven't laid it on its side like I do with the jars so they stay bunched up. Doesn't seem like they are rotting though. It seems to be doing well, but I like in the round trays where it is more separated. I am going to start putting out separate crops instead of doing a mix of seeds. I want to control the amount of each flavor.
