Supposedly if the mom has a venereal disease the baby can contract it in the

eyes through the birth canal and go blind. So the eye drops are supposed to

protect baby from mom's VD.

And these are mandatory?????????What if mum never had VD??????!!What next, maybe

tie babies up at birth so they don't scratch themselves, in case some rare germ.

Sheesh!!!!!!!

Sherm: I have had good luck with Voltaran drops, they are non-steroidal.

Methotrexate however finally kicked my worst bout of uveitis. Hope that helps.

Sherm,

I can no longer take steroid drops for my eyes as it causes the inner-eye

pressure to increase. I have been given the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory

drops which have given little immediate relief to my eyes. I'll use them, but

it seems they do very little to shorten any flareup.

The steroid drops were a miracle for me. It took me years to adjust to not

being able to use them. There was always a temptation to use them anyway when

the inflammation got really bad. I finally threw the old bottle away and

decided long-term vision was more important than short-term relief.

Probably better to treat the underlying problem then the

symptom (dry eyes).

Wonder if you tried uping your EFA oils (eg. Flax oil,...), and

balancing Estrogen level in your body. (dry eyes is often a

problem in peri-menopausal women - I'm NOT implying anything here)

Any NDs out there with any comments?

Thanks,

I do take lots of healthy oils already. It could be peri-menopause,

but I have had this condition for many years now. I definitely have

some hormone issues.

I think I may have to do this also. I've never had any problems with my eyes. Now I find my left eye gets extremely teary, painful, very red, eyelid swollen and after finally getting diagnosed by eye dr. as irritation to cornea he told me to put eye drops for dry eyes. This really helps. My eye does this now at least once a week.

We have talked about our eyes being affected. I didn't start having problems with my eyes being attacked until I stopped using eye drops. I have recently started up again, and am experiencing a decrease in eye attacks. I included a few examples of leadingf eye drops for redness and you can see that most of them contain a derivative of salt. Chloride. I also found the inactive ingredients quite interesting as well. Some contain Benzalkonium chloride, known for anti parasite activity, and sodium chloride, salt. I have used the original Visine, Visine AC, and the Clear Eyes AC. I have had good luck with all three, although I prefer Clear Eyes AC, but couldn't tell you why. Feels better? I have 20/30 vision, never worn glasses. I have used eye drops most of my life until developing the crap the birdmites left me. I don't have a problem with tearing, and the rebounding redness was

short lived when I stopped. It also seems to help me flush out my tear ducts. I don't know if some of you would be interested in using, but I thought I would share a small part of what seems to be really working for my eyeballs.... ...Frito

A longer-lasting formula that lasts for up to 6 hours.

VISINE TEARS (Glycerin 0.2%, Hypromellose 0.2%, Polyethylene glycol 400 1% - Used AS NEEDED)

Contains ingredients found in natural tears instead of chemicals.

VISINE-A (Formerly OCUHIST) (Naphazoline hydrochloride 0.025%, Pheniraminemaleate 0.3%)

Antihistamine combined with a vasodilator for itchy eyes associated with allergy.

Clear Eyes Allergy-A Formula

(Naphazoline Hydrochloride 0.012% w/v, Zinc Sulfate 0.25% w/v, Glycerin 0.2% w/v)

Atropine is one of the kinds of eye drops used to dilate eyes. The following

website says it does not contain thimerosal but also says not to be used for

those under 6 yrs. old.

http://www.adcock.co.za/Resources/ProductDocs/Atropine%20Eye%20Drops1.pdf

Homatropine's another which is often used. It also does not contain thimerosal

but says may cause unusual side effects in children.

Also keep in mind just because something says it does not contain

thimerosol, does not automatically mean it is mercury free.

There are plenty of other compounds they use that include mercury.

Keep an out out for any of the terms that include things like mercuric,

mercurial, even just mer...... something, etc

Sometimes they even invent a whole new " term " , which is listed on the

contents, but the actually ingredients of what is contained in in that

item are not disclosed.

My Mum gets this sodium chloride stuff from the hospital, And I do find

it quite soothing I have the same problem...esp I find when cooking or

burning something always sets off my eyes...Also being at the

computer...I read a study about how the electro maganetic feild of

computers causes amalgams to give off more mercury vapor! so watch out

for that if you still have amalgams. I have just had 2 more amalgams

removed a total of 4 out now I am so excited about this, 2 to go :)

anyway strangly my eyes havent been hurting so much today hmmmmm,

funnily enough when I was in the acute phase of mercury posioning I

couldnt look at bright lights and my eyes killed, I remember using some

regular optrix eye drops and they stung, sure enough upon looking at

the ingredents mercury in there!!!

Similasan makes Piknk Eye RElief which works perfectly, better than any

prescription drops and it is homeopathic.  Found out that visine and those

actually cause the body to PERMANENTLY dialate those blood vessels, with an

ingredient that is in many eye drops.  So you might find out the ingredient next

time you are in the store, then talk to the pharmacist about what it effect it

causes, then read the warning inserts.

I don't use similasan because their eye drops contain silver, and Andy says not

to use products containing silver. He recommended we try high vitamin containing

eye drops called viva drops from life extension foundation. I called to order

them but they may not be carried there anymore. They are made by vision

pharmasuticals. I have ordered four bottles and they are trying to get some for

me.

I have been using refresh eyedrops on my children, but I would love to find

something better. I looked at eyedrop ingredients for hours this week and that

is the best I could find locally.

We used atropine in the past with our daughter to prevent blindness. In my mind,

blindness trumps mercury damage because if you happen to have to take a drop

containing mercury for a short time to preserve your vision, you can always

chelate it out later. Plus, our daughters atropine did not contain mercury, we

checked first, but even if it did, we would ask for an alternative, but if there

wasn't one we would take it. This fear of eyedrops in the autism community

really bugs me because 80% of parents don't get their children's eyes examined

anyway. The proper way is with dialation and a slit lamp by a opthomologist, not

optomitrist. There could be a higher amount of siblings of autistic children

who have eye diseases. In the little forum i belong to for uveitis (vision

threatening eye disease my daughter has), five siblings have autism. That

sounds like too much of a coinsidence, so please get your child's eyes examined

regularly. They have mercury free eyedrops at the eye doctor. You just have to

ask for them.

Which ingredient in visine permanantely dialates blood vessels? I would like to

know to avoid that ingredient.

Another alternative for eye wash would be sole, pronounced so-lay.

I use Visine-A. It burns going in (what doesn't?) but it helps and I tolerate it

just fine for now.
