Guest guest
,any person who has been through contracting bacterial meningitis once, knows that it can happen again, and if they don't, then they need to get a new doctor. We knew going into getting the cochlear implant for our daughter taht the chances of her contracting the illness were increased, and in her case, she had an even greater chance due to her inner ear malformations. Meningitis Date: Fri, 8 Feb 2008 21:21:46 -0500 What a lot of people don't realize is that getting meningitis once does not prevent you from getting it again. In fact, you are more likely to get it a second time, or 3rd, etc. if you've had it once. So PLEASE people, get the vaccine. I commend for taking the effort to spread the word about the importance of vaccinations. My daughter, now 4.5 contracted bacterial meningitis twice in her short life. Even with the vaccination, she was still susceptible. It is extremely important for us to know the dangers of this illness and work towards preventing it every way we can. Michela was fortunate both times, the first time, we did in fact almost lose her...but she has a strong will and came out of it with very little regression. My heart goes out to the family that did lose their little girl a year ago. Nothing can make that pain go away, let's be supportive and not so eager to stir up unnecessary battles. . Guest guest
I'm not sure if it's the national standard, or if each state is different, but here in Colorado the Hib (meningitis) vaccine is given at ages 2 months, 4 months, and 6 months (however, some of the Hib vaccines do not require a dose at 6 months). A booster dose is given at 12 to 15 months. I would only be really concerned about my child getting meningitis if he got the vaccine... my chiro recently told me of a 17-year-old boy who received the first of a series of Hib vaccines as part of the requirements for admittance to the college he wanted to attend. He developed meningitis soon after receiving the shot. I'm not sure of his current status, I keep meaning to ask, but I know he was a very sick boy and they weren't sure he was going to recover. Guest guest
You diagnose meningitis by looking at spinal fluid. Blood work can indicate an infectious process but not what or where, physical symptoms can make you suspect what is going on but an LP is what you have to do to confirm. Viral meningitis is usually different from bacterial but having seen the results of meningitis when it was diagnosed too late and therefore not treated in a timely fashion I would not waste time and try to guess what is going on. Guest guest
I think most viral infections have over-lapping symptoms. Blood work is needed to label the specific offending virus. I'm not sure about meningitus but from what I know Dr. Goldberg seems to treat active infections, unless they are a direct result of a bigger problem/infection, then he takes care of the main/biggest issue first. - in Mobile, AL ______________________________________ " You must write for children in the same way as you do for adults, only better. My husband & I have been reading about it lately and from reading the symptoms, we feel our son(Joab) really has most of the symptoms! Especially with the constant pain..headache,fever and unknown ear pain. We're just wondering if that's the kind of viral infection he has??? Thank you. God Bless! Guest guest
Some good signs of meningitis are a stiff neck...especially if you bend the knee while they are on their back and if they get a sharp pain in their neck. Also, bacterial meningitis will have a purple dotted rash as a sign. Meningitis is very serious and is usually detected by a spinal tap. - --- " C. - Wonderwegian " <carriecox@...> wrote: > I think most viral infections have over-lapping > symptoms. Guest guest
Hasn't Joab had these symptoms for some time? If so, I wouldn't think it would be bacterial meningitis; I think that only gets worse without treatment. I suppose it could be viral meningitis though. You may want to call or e-mail the office with your concerns about the fever, irritability, earache, etc. Please let us know how he's doing. Guest guest
I agree. If you think Joab has meningitis, he should be seen by a doctor. I'm just curious though . . . would indications of meningitis show up in blood work, such as high WBC? I know the only way to positively confirm is a lumbar puncture, but I was just wondering if there were some preliminary blood tests to determine if that was a possibility. Robyn, I'm thinking about the viral meningitis may be?? I'll see what he says and take him tomorrow. He's doing a lot of screaming nowadays & we're so confused!! His WBC was actually low last time we did the test and Dr. G. was concerned. We'll do another blood test for it tomorrow & I'll call and ask if we can do it also for the meningitis at the same time, if he thinks that's the best way to detect it??? Will keep you posted. Guest guest
Hi, . Both Noah and I get migraines. With Noah, they come on suddenly and he begins screaming, hitting his head and crying. We have Imitrex nasal spray but we usually try to treat with 200mg of Ibuprofen. After about 30 minutes, he calms down and his head seems to be better. He used to get them weekly, but now it's only a couple of times a month. Guest guest
: Enbrel can't " cause " viral meningitis; it only weakens your body's ability to fight off virus's and germs. None-the-less, viral meningitis is a very serious disease and I'm sorry you've had to go through this 3 times! Have these been life-threatening experiences and were you on Enbrel each time? If so, have your doctors suggested going off Enbrel? Joanna Hoelscher
Guest guest
Yes, I've been on Enbrel for the last ten years, lately on and off because of health insurance/costs matters. The doctors in the hospital told me to go off it. My family is 100% against me taking it. Yet is the only thing that allows me to have a normal life. Tough call. Guest guest
Same thing my pulmonologist said yesterday after the bronchoscopy...MTX and Enbrel not directly responsible...but brought my immune system down low enough for the infection to gain entrance. Guest guest
good point but remember Maureen, that NO vaccine gives immunity ever, even to those strains they say they cover. Very infrequently something comes along that causes me to need a reminder. I tried to use the group search but the results are a bit overwhelming, so I apologize in advance for bringing up something I'm sure has been discussed exhaustively. So, I was casually talking to a like-minded mum the other day and she brought up vaccines. She doesn't do them, generally, but once her children are a bit older she does tetanus and meningitis. She told me that she is close to a couple of families who didn't vaccinate for meningitis and had kids who ended up very sick with it, needing skull surgery, etc I'm here looking for a reminder as to why I don't vaccinate for meningitis, please!!
