Guest guest
Heat rises and cold drops. In a cooler though I'd think that all would be cool but the bottom could be colder since is falls. So the heat would rise to the top. That is why upstairs will be hotter than downstairs. If it works the way you are doing it, why change. I'd have to climb into the cooler, LOL, as i can't handle when it gets too hot.  Carolyn Wilkerson  ________________________________ To: sproutpeople Sent: Sunday, July 8, 2012 12:16 AM Subject: Re: I have a good sprouting (keeping them cool) question!!  Melody - using your theory that cold travels down, I'd go with the ice on top first. I'm thinking that, since the bottom of the sprout container is kind of thin, ice under that might make it too cold. I heard that cold travels DOWN. I find this to be true because when I use my sprout cooling system I place a cold iced pack thing on top of the top cover and the sprouts are fine. I do place more cold things inside on the bottom of the cooling system, but when you have 7 trays, well, the top tray sprouts just fine (and I always have an ice pack thingee on the top cover). So in my mind, it stands to reason that if I want to have more sprouts I just might be able to place some trays side by side (with covers), place an ice thingy on top of each one and this should work. And the next morning, rinse and drain, and place back on shelf, cover and get a brand new ice pack thingy out of my freezer. > > Thoughts?? Melody > P.S. Guest guest
Carolyn: As I explained in my previous post, my question was a WHAT IF?? scenario. What if I had no more room in the cooling system and I needed more sprouts. Can I then do the ice pack on the top of the green tray cover? I just made a video. Will post it as soon as it uploads. Guest guest
Dona: Here's my latest experiment. Will know by tonight if they remain cool. This will be REALLY good if it works. I can grow enough sprouts to feed all of Brooklyn. lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgmovuTSnQM Melody > > > > Hi all. > > > > Let's say I have no more room in my home made cooling system and I want to leave two trays out on my living room shelf. > > > > I would have one bottom round green tray and of course a cover. Guest guest
That looks like it should work. Those freezable things are a great invention! I've been having a problem I don't remember before, and haven't figured out yet: my tap water during the day is not cool or cold - it feels warm to me - warmer than I want to rinse sprouts with. During the evening it cools off. I don't know why this is happening, but it's not only when I rinse sprouts that I may want colder water coming from tap. We've of course had very hot weather here in Arkansas too, but...? Guess I'll have to catch a neighbor and see if they have it too. Not complaining! - at least no power outages! Guest guest
Doesn't it cool off when you run it for a little white? Could save it in buckets and set it on the counter until it cools down. Ours is sometimes hot when it first comes out of the spout but I figure that it is from being in the pipes in the house. When it comes to washing hands, it isn't hot enough to burn so it is fine to wash hands.  I use distilled water or filtered water rather than tap water for my plants inside and sprouts. Carolyn Wilkerson  ________________________________ To: sproutpeople Sent: Sunday, July 8, 2012 11:16 AM Subject: Re: I have a good sprouting (keeping them cool) question!!  That looks like it should work. Guest guest
According to the National Weather Service the high in my neighborhood is going to be 92 today. In Brooklyn 87. I do have two advantages. My kitchen faces North and I have ceiling fans. I don't have any thermometers in my house. I'll have to get one. ew Re: I have a good sprouting (keeping them cool) question!! Really? Is it 90 degrees in your kitchen? Because that's what my wall thermometer indicates it is in my kitchen. lol I'm not taking any chances with my sprouties. One time (before I knew what the heck I was doing and way before I had any sprout cooling system), I had these trays all stacked on top of each other. It reached 80 in my kitchen (this was about 2 years or so ago. Well, (and this happened overnight), I went to look at the trays and there was mold all over the sprouts on all the trays. I threw out everything (and no, they weren't dry, I know the difference). They also smelled. That's when I started to put them in the bedroom and keep the a/c on during the day (as well as when I slept). Got too expensive to do that. So I did my cooling system and so far so good. You reach 90 in your kitchen??? Melody -
Guest guest
Thank you for the link. I am concerned that my micros are getting long stems and small leaf development. Maybe I am just expecting more from them than they have to give. I was wondering if I grew under lights, would I get more leaf and less height on the stem? Could it be the varieties I am growing....I have Bruno's Mix, Alfalfa, Rutabega, Curly Cress, Lettuce Mixes, Mustard Mixes....seems like something else but anyway you get the idea. Any experience with getting the cotyledons larger? Thx Donna ________________________________ To: sproutpeople Sent: Monday, July 9, 2012 7:29 AM Subject: Re: I have a good sprouting (keeping them cool) question!!  Donna: Here is a link to where I get mine from the Sprouthouse. They don't show the mat, only the greens growing on them. Read the description. These are the 10 x 20 Sure to grow Mats. http://www.sprouthouse.com/Sure_To_Grow_p/biostg.htm And as for lights on my microgreens? Depends. Lets say I have 3 or 4 10 x 20 trays growing on my shelves. They could be sunnies, pea shoots, popcorn shoots, etc. They will get the sun all day long because that's where the shelves are located. But what if it's a rainy day. No sun at all? I then take one of my lights that I have clipped to the shelves. I turn on the lights and they are aimed at the greens. does the trick. I have a few of these lights. I don't use them often but that's what I do when I need my greens to get kind of light and I don't want turn on the lights in a particular room. I have a video on this somewhere. I'll find it and post it here. Guest guest
Lucy - I've seen Melody's video where she dunks her SproutGardens, too. This only works when you have enough mass/long sprouts that they don't all float away. I've just gotten to the place where my batches get to this point. (Apparently I don't exactly have a " green sprout thumb. " ) But it would definitely save a lot of water for multiple batches to rinse. I'm working on it. Thanks, Dona > > > > That looks like it should work. Guest guest
Hi, I really don't know anything about stem length and leaf development. I'm just happy they grow in my sure to grow mat. lol I just made you a greening up with light video. Naturally I only do this when the sun goes down and only if I have to. Here you go Melody
