Guest guest
Sue: One of the problems that I have been seeing is dysbiosis: abnormal floral growth in the G.I. tract. A good example is a recent case I am working on. Couple (ages 42) and teen age daughter. Severe diarrhea. She has an overgrowth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which was identified in her environment and tap water (on a well source). The male and daughter have periods of diarrhea, which has not been cultured yet. We also detected Acinetobacter in the indoor environment which may be adding to the dysbiosis (cultures are in the process). Dysbiosis occurs because of abnormal balance in intestinal flora. Antibiotics will make the situation worse. It is difficult to return the flora back to normal state. There was a publication on this subject where the wife had severe dysbiosis. The husband was normal. The treating internist decided to transplant the husband's intestinal flora into the woman. I do not recall the specifics, but essentially the physician introduced the husband's flora into the woman's colon. Within a few days she had normalized and the diarrhea went away. The physician actually typed the woman's flora and did identify abnormal bacterial flora that the transplant successfully returned to normal.
