Guest guest
CBS is an enzyme within the methylation cycle. An upregulation (increased enzyme activity) causes excess sulphur groups which can then increase ammonia (hence sulphur intolerence). When intolerent to sulphur, some also eliminate sulphate but not everyone agrees on this. I think like many things we have to do, its a case of testing what suits your child. Alison R Thank you Alison for replying. We have been giving DS epsom salt baths because when he was first diagnosed and I started searching on the internet it was one of the first things I read that could help a child with Autism. I presumed it was because it helped to provide them with Magnesium which they need. I had not appreciated that they would also provide Sulphate. I'm sorry my grasp of the science behind all the treatments is not what it should be. Can't say we have really noted any reaction to the baths either way. (Except for the red ear.) Could you please explain what a CBS up-regulation is?My DS is on a very restricted diet and the only high sulphur foods I think he has is green beans. He has only been eating these since Christmas and I haven't notice a reaction. What sort of a reaction do you get if high sulpur foods are a problem? Sorry for my ignorant questions. Thanks Sue To: Autism-Biomedical-Europe Sent: Wednesday, 8 February 2012, 13:12 Subject: Re: One red ear! ( Sorry if this is a really stupid question) Red ear(s) can be a sign of phenol intolerence. Sulphation is the pathway responsible for proccessing phenols and epsom salts is used to support sulphation by giving sulphate to the body. I don't know what this means for your son but there could be a link here. Do you think he reacts to phenols? Do you use no fenol? Why do you use Mg sulpahte baths? Amy Yasko does not recommend mg sulphate baths if you have a CBS up-regulation but this is due to the sulphate not the Mg. Saying that all the parents I have spoke to (including myself) have noticed they are still better with the epsom salts baths even when CBS upregulation so I think this is still out to the jury! How does he do with high sulphur foods?BWAlison R Hi everyone, I have noticed that when DS has his epsom salts bath his left ear always goes red. I would have thought that if it was just a case of him getting hot then both ears would go red. I know that red ears can be a sign of allergy but wondered why it would be happening in the bath. We use no bubble bath. Could this be an indication of anything? Could it mean that magnesium doesn't agree with him? Sorry, I know it sounds silly but it is always his left ear. Strange. Any ideas, thanks. Sue
