My Sophie has just -> turned 4 - and I really believe that all of a sudden things seem to be going -> towards her being verbal. I for one do not believe -> that any long term diagnosis can be made at 3 or 4, as I really believe that -> there is a lot about child and human development in general that is not -> properly understood. Genetics is not all - there is something to do with -> innate drive and determination built into some at least children that -> surprisingly often results in children with some genetic label achieving -> things allegedly impossible for individuals in that category. Similarly I -> refuse to believe that an autism or autistic spectrum diagnosis at 3 is more -> than an interim label. That child will have new skills by 4 or 5 or 6 - and -> will continue to grow and develop, maybe not meeting all the standard -> average milestones. There is also the possibility that within the next few -> years some of the research going on will lead to greater understanding of -> autism and relief and treatments that work on many more children labelled -> autistic so as to enable and assist them to be more independent - with -> autistic features able to be managed and controlled, if not " cured " . -> Don't let the negativity of that diagnosis at age 3 limit what you try, -> expect and enjoy with your child. I know alot of people on here and other list have told of how their children spoke at least some then lost it, mine never lost anything she ever learned, but its been slow from the start, I guess thats where the MR comes in on their DX . but like you I believe their DX's are just labels at this age too. its just frustrating. I guess I want them to give more hope than they are. love t
