Is he in a main stream classroom? How old again? My son started being aggressive this past fall.I thought it was puberty onset- he is 12.I thought it was stress- last summer husband had a heart attack- our friends son age 3 drowned- he started a new school that we weren't thrilled with.Caleb's behavior was never easy- but his aggression was - over the top-We put him on risperdol in December- I too not for "drugs"It helped. He gained 54 pounds in three months. We took him off- he's not physically aggressive. He started a new school in april- a school that specializes in kids on the spectrum that are higher functioning- no restorations or seclusions.Come to find out- because of media- and Caleb coming home with bruised legs- Caleb was being restrained several times a day- restrained for not doing math- His IEP said- when he refuses math- give him other work- he'll do math later in day.18 restraints in one week!I'm bringing this up because he too has anxiety about bees- And fear of men he doesn't know-It took him being in a safe place for him to start talking about how he felt about what was going on in class.Anxiety was increased- he had nothing to give- because of specific issues in school.Medication was needed- can still make things helpful- I'm just saying make sure there is not an unknown stressor that could be instigating his reactions. Kids don't always know what is bothering them-JaneSent from my iPhone

Prozac & Paxil are similar not so with Zoloft as far as I know. Thanks for the info. My son is completely disconnected with his feeling. He has no interest, can only have surface conversations. He never goes to anyone's house nor has anyone over. He doesn't call anyone nor does anyone call him. He's bored stiff cuz he doesn't want to do anything. He's told me he does what's asked of him around the house cuz it gives him something to do. He told me he's never looked forward to anything & I know that I could take anything away from him (electronics, games) he could care less. He's petrified of being outside because of flying stinging insects, doesn't like to touch anything that's been outside, is outside waiting for me right now with jeans, tee & hooded heavy sweat jacket with the hood up & it's hot here........ He doesn't show much emotion, his smiles in picture look so forced (he says he doesn't know how to smile) & his eyes are usually half closed. Getting closer to getting off the fence about trying the Zoloft

Thanks Laurie

54 lbs. in 3 months!! I heard they gained weight but wowza!! Sounds like he had a lot on his plate. That's one reason why I homeschool my special needs child. You never know how equipped or how sensitive teachers are. You see on the news all the time about how mean teachers can be to special kids. It's sad! To: "autism-aspergers "

My son turned 16 in May. He has been on Zoloft for several years now, and it does help him. We are very fortunate that he has not had much of the aggression issues, but he does suffer from anxiety. He started off on 50, then went to 100 and now is on 150. He had his best year so far at school (sophomore) this past year and I know it was partly the fact that he is maturing, but that he felt more in control. I was not keen on putting him on the meds, but I am glad I did.Vicky

The superintendent of schools lost his job, the assistant and the business manager- still waiting for the new super who starts in August to meet with me, I want the pupil services administrator fired too- its a long story but if you google Middletown CT scream rooms- you will catch some of it- not all- but some.Perfect classroom behavior? Wow. I'm scratching my head too then. Maybe it's generalized anxiety?I hate that I can go to three different doctors and get three different interpretations of what's going on. Good luck in your search-And about the 54 pound gain- id say our family already struggles with portion control- the baby sitter after school loves to bake and feed him- when he started risperdol his already "love for food" became an obsession- and short of locking cabinets- not something we had strength to beat. Now that he is in a good school, has connected to peers like him, he is able to tell us his anxiety issues and we are considering a drug to help him. It's a path that is always changing!Sent from my iPhone

Yes mainstream - hasn't been formally dx'd.

Every teacher that I've talked & his IEP states appropriate classroom behavior as his strengths. He never causes a problem & does what he's told to do. Most of the teachers have said they wish they had a classroom full of kids like him.

He's 15 1/2 yrs. been hitting my head against a brick wall since he was 8yrs !!

I think I'd get charged with asualt if someone restrained my child like that! I hope someone loses a job at the very least over that!

My daughter's Dr put her on Metformin to help with the constant hunger/food cravings/obsession that her meds caused. It helped quite a bit.

All that taking into consideration his dr wants to start him on 50mg of

Zoloft. Anyone have anything at all (experiences or research on teens on the

spectrum taking Zoloft) that you're willing to share. Privates welcome too.

>> TIA Laurie

my son has taken zoloft for about 3 years it really helped with his anxiety

which caused him to be aggressive and to hit objects and just generally be a

miserable little boy he started at 50 and is now at 150

Metformin? Is she insulin resistant or pr-diabetic/diabetic? I take that for my pre-diabetes. Does not seem to help the food issues, but I think it is more comfort for me than anything.Vicky To: autism-aspergers Sent: Monday, July 9, 2012 9:38 PM Subject: Re: Re: Zoloft for 15yr old male

It stabilized blood sugar levels so she doesn't feel hungry all the time. Her psychiatrist prescribed it 'off label' to help reduce food cravings. It helped her.
