the lettuces I grow are leaf lettuce and meclun (not sure I spelled that

right).  I like cabbage cooked or in a cole slaw but I don't care much for it

in a salad.  I love it as a cabbage roll but that is cooked.  I don't like

cole slaw that has heavy pieces of cabbage as I like the more delicate stuff.

A little purple cabbage is great in a salad though.

I like the European greens but that is expensive and I am trying to grow my

own.  I plan to grow some spinach too.  Just found that ants are eating up my

corn and beans.   Got to get some soap in a spray bottle and get it out there

on them.  haven't seemed to bother the tomatoes yet.  I need toge some ant

stuff in the cans to tke out and try to kill the hive I guess.  Where one

branch of corn was, nothing is there now.  I have never seen something totally

disappear.  The ants are devouring the corn stalks.

I have stopped eating lettuce in my salads. I buy red (purple) cabbage for 49

cents a pound and cut it into salad sized chunks and add whatever sprouts I have

to that and that is my salad. I find it very satisfying, tasty and cheap, plus a

major nutritional powerhouse. Iceberg lettuce I consider 'dumpster lettuce'

since I find so much of that stuff in the dumpsters. Ten times more iceberg

lettuce than brassicas. The only people who will take it are the ones who have

chickens. (Thank god for chickens, they will eat anything!)

it has NO nutrients at all. Unless you are growing it yourself (so you know

where it came from), why not skip the iceberg and use the sprouts as a basis for

your salads. I've been doing this for years. Saves a lot of money on lettuce

buying. I now grow my own leaf lettuce outside of my door. And now I'm growing

Stevia too!!!

Wow, I had no idea that iceberg lettuce had some benefits. Thanks very much for

clearing this up.

I think of iceburg lettuce provides fiber and the fluid or water.  The sugar is

minimal really at 2 g.  I don't think I'd sorry about that and it does help

make some other greens less bitter.  It is something to mix in with other, more

nutritious lettuces for some balance and the iceburg is cheap.  Romaine though

more expensive would be a better lettuce for nutrition while not being very

bitter.   That is just my opinion, not a recommendation.
