Here's a recent WSJ article on the topic:

apps for kids with autism, as well as for toddlers, so I was thinking about

getting them a used or refurbished first gen iPad to share. Is this a good

idea? Do you think they're old enough? Are the apps worthwhile? Will an otter

box prevent it from being destroyed? Any other thoughts or suggestions???

Thanks!

I also have a 2.5 year old on the spectrum- he has loved using iPads pretty much

from the first time he saw one, and is quite adept at using it. We finally got

him his own about a year ago because he was constantly trying to take his

fathers-and it has worked out well. There are a lot of great apps out there,

particularly for language, and you-tube is a great resource for learning songs.

The caveat is that we limit his time on it, and he only uses it in conjunction

with one of us, so it's use is more of a social experience. I would also

strongly recommend a case that cushions all of the edges, to protect from damage

from dropping-ours has fallen several times, and other than the case being a bit

ratty it's doing well. In fact a side benefit has been that he realizes he needs

to take care of it and he is very careful with it.

I have found the iPads to be pretty durable, but they are pricey. An otterbox

would certainly be something I would get for it if I was letting toddlers play

with it.

App wise, you can get literally thousands of apps for kids and kids on the

spectrum. Some are more worth while than others. I always start with free apps

before I look at buying an app, because you can get SO many free apps.
