Guest guest
The best way is to dig them out, but some trees will sprout again from just a tiny bit of root left behind. There are a number of stump removal products on the market that are not toxic or harmful to the environment. Check with you local hardware store or nursery. read the instructions before you buy. Some require drilling holes and filling them with kerosene and burning. EW - question for the master gardener EW I don't know if you can help me or not. I have a few tiny " stumps " I need to get rid of that I can't dig out. What can I use that isn't toxic to kill them so they don't try to keep sending up little shoots? Guest guest
If you can drill a hole in the top, can put salt in it and on it and then water it so the salt goes in the ground. May kill grass in the area as well.  I have heard that the salt can take out a tree. Do you think that would work EW? Guest guest
I have a " flame thrower " , which is like a giant chef's torch. I hit any stubborn weeds or stumps with it, to burn them out. I got mine at Home Depot or Lowes-don't remember which. It attaches to the small lp gas tanks used for bbq grills and is wonderful for such things-just don't do it on a windy day, and have a garden hose handy to soak the area after you have torched it. I use a standard small chefs torch for the same purpose in my container gardens. Weeds and stumps HATE fire, lol. > > If you can drill a hole in the top, can put salt in it and on it and then water it so the salt goes in the ground. May kill grass in the area as well.  I have heard that the salt can take out a tree. Do you think that would work EW? > > > Carolyn Wilkerson > > >  > > > To: " sproutpeople " <sproutpeople > > Sent: Sunday, April 15, 2012 4:05 PM > Subject: EW - question for the master gardener > > >  > EW > > I don't know if you can help me or not. Guest guest
Here in my area, there is already too much natural salts in the soil. I definitely would not add more salt. This goes for putting salt on slugs. Something I learned to do as a kid. ew Re: EW - question for the master gardener If you can drill a hole in the top, can put salt in it and on it and then water it so the salt goes in the ground.
