Guest guest
I am on my third Excaliber dehydrator-they are WONDERFUL...last for years, even with heavy use (mine runs ALL night, EVERY night-I run it at night as the fan produces heat and is noisy, so I just do it that way so I don't have to listen to it during the day) You really can't beat the Excaliber for heavy duty use. I have tried for years to get them to do a " group buy " for us like we can get with the solar ovens, but they won't do that. As I posted earlier though, the NESCO square dehydrator is every bit as good. I highly recommend either-the Nesco is way cheaper, very efficient, and although much more compact spacewise, easily holds a good amount on the trays that come with it. We can do the group buy on the Nesco-you can see it at http://mealmasters.webs.com/apps/webstore/ I bought the Nesco to use in my RV, since the Excalibuer is WAY too big, and I ended up using the Nesco in my house and moving the Ex to my storage area, since I just don't need one that big. Either of them are a wise choice, depending on your needs. I also run my Nesco overnight, every night, and have had no issues with it-it doesn't produce the heat that the Excalibur does, and is quieter, but I have been in the habit for over 20 years of running it overnight, so I still do > > Ok, I've done the research online & this brand is THE BEST, esp if you're trying to stick to raw foods. They are quite pricey...anyone know of any good deals out there on them? Has anyone tried drying pea shoots or sunnies? Would they be crisp like kale? Sometimes I crave crunchy stuff...I don't eat junk food anymore... I miss the crunchiness & saltiness of potato chips...if the food dehydrator makes crunchy greens, this would be interesting...anyone tried them? >

Guest guest
They are worth the investment. I grow ALL of my own food, so I rely heavily on dehydrators for preserving food, and being gluten free, I also make my own rice crackers and assorted veggie chips, so mine really get a work out. As I said, I run them all night, every night. You are likely to be happy with either one. The advantage to the Excalibur, is that you can remove the trays and put mason jars in it to make homemade yogurt, whereas with the Nesco, there is no way to do that, although there are a few tricks for making it work Sent from my iPad > I think I would use one...I put in a3/4 acre garden & do a lot of canning. Guest guest
I will check on the details for a group buy tomorrow. In the meantime, you might check with some of your local thrift shops or craigslist-I often see NEW dehydrators, still in the box for just a few bucks. Even if you just got one of the simple round ones, it would give you a start to make sure it is something you want to invest in. I got one of my excaliburs on craigslist for about 40 bucks! It needed a good cleaning, but they are easy enough to sanitize. Quite frankly, the round ones are SILLY-who cooks round food, lol-BUT..would be a good starter unit...that is what I started out with. > > > I really, really want an Excalibur, but it may be quite a few months before I am able to get one. Guest guest
Excaliber is best? But which of the 5? I am not sure I plan to do that much to warrant the Excaliber and the size is a bit large. I am sure it is probably the best though. Guest guest
There are a number of the Nesco, , and some say the temperatures and others don't. They only go to 95-150 or 155 I think. I don't know the temperature for herbs. that is what I thought I would eat the least of and I may be anticipating way in advance and may find my thumb is not so green. I figure I can eat the lettuces the Aerogarden does but don't know that I can use all those herbs. When the French Canadians get back I could give it away but most of my other friends here are older and don't use herbs much. I sometimes go to a cooking class and am introduced to herbs and with Dave and me, we need to add herbs to keep out the salt. Want it to be interesting. I could dry flowers too as I plan on having edible flowers. I think I'll be needing another Aerogarden for tomatoes.  I'd rather do that than have them in the yard. But do have some blueberries to plant in the morning before I fly out. Still have someone to water things while I am gone. I didn't plant my Aerogardens though as figured they would get dry while I was gone, but I think I was mistaken as sounds like they take 2 weeks before have to replace water and liquid fertilizer.  Even the poeple I bought the 2 off said that it produced more than they could eat. I have neighbors to pass out the salad mix to so not worried about that. I figure I could cook it and freeze it for even lettuces as could use in soups I suppose. I don't have spinach though as it must grow at a different rate or size than the lettuces or herbs. I got my box in from LTD and want to put out in the morning before I fly out.  I have been checking prices and the different ones. Probably won't decide for a week or close to it.  Carolyn Wilkerson  To: sproutpeople Sent: Monday, April 16, 2012 10:23 PM Subject: Re: Excaliber dehydrators & drying pea shoots & sunnies  I am on my third Excaliber dehydrator-they are WONDERFUL...last for years, even with heavy use (mine runs ALL night, EVERY night-I run it at night as the fan produces heat and is noisy, so I just do it that way so I don't have to listen to it during the day) You really can't beat the Excaliber for heavy duty use. Guest guest
I may be interested in the Nesco, though I think I saw a better price on them than what they had listed. I'll check later. Not much time now and I have to start getting ready to leave. Hubby has to bring in my suitcase for me. I need to stain stick clothes and wash them so I have all choices. Guest guest
Craigslist here doesn't have the Nesco. I think there is an Excaliber but asking about $225 for that. With used don't know about them at times though. I'd try it if the price were worthwhile. Only one I figured was worth checking out as to price is the K-tel and I never heard of it before. The cheaper dehydrators, from what I understand, have hotter areas than others, causing uneven dehydration. Also the excalabur has a great warranty. I would use the LG capacity with my family & goodies grown in my garden. I live in Michigan & I like to savor fresh-as-possible veggies as much as I can, lol. Guest guest
Carolyn, Look very closely at these unites. Thay are cheap run offs of the Ex. They have no front door to close the front, The trays themselves are the front. This means if you would like to do yoghurt, ½ pepper etc you can't do it because you will have to remove trays and that will leave the front open. Also the trays are a cheap plastic A clear blue tint or a clear plastic that don't hold up. I don't think you can buy extra trays. in VT.
