Skin problems from snow boots

Natural rubber is vulcanized, reacted with sulfur to cross-link it. Otherwise it

would be very sticky. A few people are sensitive to such organo-sulfur

compounds. Newer rubber is some sort of synthetic. Polybutadiene is common, as

are polyacrylonitrile and vinyl. All have stabilizers and possibly plasticizers

added, some of which cause sensitivity problems in a very few people. You might

try putting a plastic bag, such as a bread bag, over your foot before putting

any shoes or boots on. This might prevent exposure of your foot skin to the

rubber irritants.Plastic bags over socks in boots are really not too

uncomfortable.

If the problem is primarily just at the toes however, your doctor might be

right in thinking it is a simple fungal infection such as athlete's foot,

treatable with antifungals, or as a recent New York Times health article

suggested, with vegetable oil containing ground garlic cloves. Boots not only

keep water out, but they also keep in any water which might have leaked in,

providing ideal conditions for fungal skin infections.

I am wondering if this is similar to the problem I am having with my toes. Lasst

year when I didn a lung capacity test I was overdosed on black, old rubber. I

then got tested for it and found I was sensitized to four components of black

rubber so I avoid it. Then I wore a pair of wellies as it had snowed up to my

knees and my toes swelled up so bad I thought they would split.

Now I recently wore a air of moccasins with brown rubber and it happened again.

It stays like that for months, it's freezing here and I an't wear any shoes or

socks or it gets worse.

I soaked in H2O2 last night but I don't know what else to do.

It feels like I am walking on razor blades. I am also taking more C and NAC.

Of course the doctors want to give me antibiotics or antifungel creme, thats

about it. Toes are also over sensitive all the time now like PN I suppose. ouch

Any suggestions anyone?

Hi Meredith,

I don't know about your rubber overdose/exposure, but I too have problems with

rubber (rubber bands, tires, gloves, floor mats, etc.) I had some testing done

and was found to be allergic to thiuram (thiuram mix). Thiurams are chemicals

which are made when producing rubber. Google 'thiuram allergy' or 'thiuram

allergy symptoms' for lots of information.

Hope this helps.
