Breath of Fresh Air, Indoors, in Las Vegas By JENNIFER STEINHAUER And so perhaps the city is an odd choice for a fragrance-free day, asit has proclaimed for Wednesday, in the hopes that perfume, hairspray, body oil and their ilk shall be banished from the land, in honor ofIndoor Air Quality Awareness Day. Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian said she was influenced in calling for the proclamation by information from the National Toxic Encephalopathy Foundation,a group based in Las Vegas that lobbies on behalf of people with braininjuries caused by chemicals. “We are asking people not to wearperfume,†Ms. Tarkanian said. She would like people and businesses touse vinegar instead of some cleaning supplies. “I thought this might be interesting,†she said, “so we will try to go scent-free for that day and see if differences occur.†Angel De Fazio, president of the foundation, said she wanted to seecasinos stop using scents in their air-conditioning systems. “I havehad an ongoing battle with most of them,†Ms. De Fazio said. “People donot understand how much of an impact the indoor air has upon theirhealth.†Lyn Leigh of the Fragrance Foundation, a perfume trade group in New York, had her own take on a fragrance-free Las Vegas: “How boring!†http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/26/us/26perfume.html
