Guest guest
It's a parents worst nightmare but most are clueless to the hazards that their children are sitting in for over 6 hrs. a day. These are the future leaders of America and they will be too sick to do anything!!! I am a former teacher and it just makes me sick thinking about it! I worked in a small private school that had water damage for years. I left in 2003 and the school is still open. Another teacher confirmed sick from the mold and others are probably sick as well. Lots of symptoms in the students. This is just to share my frustrations with trying to find a safer school building for my 14 yo, I think it is mission impossible!!!! He was initially excited about a public school with an arts program that requires audition, that school has flat roofed 50 yo buildings, the administrator didn't give us a full tour, but I did see water damaged ceiling tiles in one area....it's 32 miles away, they accepted him...... Guest guest
thanks for the suggestion, not sure that an air purifier even helps with molds, probably opening the windows would, but the wifi, no way to escape that if he goes to the laptop wifi school.... and even if an air purifier would help, can you imagine a 14 yo carrying that from class to class? kiss of death socially I would think at that age....just very frustrating how clueless the general population is, and also how little kids matter in our society, they can spend millions gilding our city's city hall dome, etc. but when it comes to maintaining the school buildings and grounds.......... sue >How about getting him a personal air purifier they would have to set up >next to >him only. Guest guest
Hi Sue, This may not work for you or your son, but I thought I'd mention that we homeschool. My girls are 3rd grade and below, though, so there are different issues with teens. Your son could pick and choose art, theater or music opportunities in the community--some families find it helps their children pursue particular interests more intensely to have the flexibility of a homeschool schedule. For subjects that seem somewhat intimidating to many parents, there are video math programs on the high school level, some public schools allow homeschoolers to come in just for certain subjects (like science with labs), you may find a local teacher who offers homeschool classes and some kids start taking community college classes in the high school years. The lifestyle isn't for everyone and I have no idea what we'll be doing when my kids hit the teen years. But in our area there are lots of homeschoolers, tons of social and educational opportunities, and the flexibility has really helped us pursue the medical care and diet that we need. Homeschooling attracts diverse groups of people--my area has lots of crunchy homeschoolers, so we've found a wonderful community and support network for our " alternative " lifestyle as compared to the more conventional community at my daughter's old preschool, where we were freaks If you're curious what the community is like in your area try to contact local homeschooling groups. Some are secular and open to all, some are Christian and require members to share beliefs, keep looking til you find the right fit. There's a homeschool coop in our area that even has a prom. Best of luck with your decision. Amy
Guest guest
Sue, I recommend you do what I do for certain projects. Create a priority list of needs - include exposures you want to avoid most (based on presence of the actual hazard plus risk of actual exposure), and include those things you really want (like something positive). Of course, your list must include the known triggers - e.g., if he has a known allergy, control of that would be high, of course. Create also a way to rate these items on likelihood of them being found in any school! some may not be realistic because of cost, occurence, knowldge, etc. Also, please make sure you are measuring the risk based on the facts. For example, the actual hazard of EMF is relatively nothing from typical sources like cell phones, microwave ovens, computers (the science is clear, the politics is not). So I would rate EMF very low at the bottom, or even, not at all on my list. I would rate water intrusion high, quality maintenance high also. Find green cleaning programs, healthy lunch programs (which may actually be better overall for your son's long term health and well being), healthy phys ed, etc. Hope this helps get you on the path to success! > > Hi, > > This is just to share my frustrations with trying to find a safer school > building for my 14 yo, I think it is mission impossible!!!! > > He was initially excited about a public school with an arts program that > requires audition, that school has flat roofed 50 yo buildings, the > administrator didn't give us a full tour, but I did see water damaged > ceiling tiles in one area....it's 32 miles away, they accepted him...... > > The
Guest guest
I would suggest home school, if anything. I wish you and yours the best. I do not have kids but have lost a baby in 2002 to SIDS and nothing can prepare you for any loss of that magnitude. Keep them safe even if allianated .just my 2 cents. Pray it all works out.  Mayleen ________________________________ From: sue <svican@...> Sent: Tue, August 10, 2010 1:49:02 AM Subject: Re: [] trying to find a safer school  thanks for the suggestion, not sure that an air purifier even helps with molds, probably opening the windows would, but the wifi, no way to escape that if he goes to the laptop wifi school.... and even if an air purifier would help, can you imagine a 14 yo carrying that from class to class? kiss of death socially I would think at that age....just very frustrating how clueless the general population is, and also how little kids matter in our society, they can spend millions gilding our city's city hall dome, etc. but when it comes to maintaining the school buildings and grounds.......... sue
