Question about soil-less medium and sunnies

I watched a youtube video and someone actually grew sunnies just by putting them

in a colander and watering them and they grew.

Well, I did the same. They took root alright. I picked up the tray with the

holes (which is lying in another tray without holes). The roots are all through

the holes. But when are the sunnies going to start shooting straight up? It's

been over one week now. We have had little sun here in Brooklyn because of the

crazy weather. Lots of light but not too much sun.

Could this be the reason? Anyone know?
