Guest guest
There is a simple way for a temporary solution to the car A/C problem. Go to the health food store and buy the 2 oz container of Citricidal. It's grapefruit seed extract and it comes in a white plastic bottle with red lettering. It will say for internal use only but it works great for spraying on plants and into car A/C units. Contrary to what I say about not having to kill mold this stuff works differently and seems to do more than just kill mold. It works great for small areas and limited use. Unfortunately it is not EPA registered as an anti-microbial and the company making it isn't foolish enough to over-sell it. Mix it twice the strength it says on the bottle with a quart of tap water and put it in a trigger spray bottle. Turn on the car and run the A/C with the fan on high to pull in outside air and exhaust through the floor vents. Spray about a quarter of the bottle into the air intake, usually along the bottom of the windshield. Most will hit the grid and the interior structure but some of the spray will go all the way through. Then switch the A/C so it exhausts through the dash vents. Repeat the spraying. The turn off the A/C and put on the heat. Repeat. Sit in the car with the fan blowing and see if the air coming out the dash vents is okay. (Sorry, but that is the only way to test this). If so, you are done. If not, mix another bottle of solution and repeat the process. Almost always 2-3 applications will sufficiently reduce the mold, bacteria and other substances coming from the A/C. If you can't get it good enough then you have to take it to the auto repair shop and have them flush the A/C coil with YOUR solution, NOT theirs! If that doesn't work then replacement, as Dr Thrasher suggested, is the only option. I have used this process on my own car and on client cars for years. They usually have me do it the first time because they aren't sure how to do it. But after they observe once they take care of it themselves. You can't ruin anything with this and the concentrate makes so much useable liquid that you don't have to worry about wasting it. Carl Grimes Healthy Habitats LLC ----- There is no simple way that I know. Perhaps Carl Grimes knows. The situations I have been involved in resulted in replacement of the AC system, particularly the condenser and confessor pans. You need to make sure that the condensation is draining from the collection pan. Some manufacturers mad the car AC a closed system and the pan does not drain or empty to the exterior. The collected water was allowed to evaporate with time. Re: [] Car and Car Air Conditioning/Re: more mold Dr. Thrasher, Do you know if there is a safe way to decontaminate a car a/c system that gets musty and how best to keep it clean? I've asked some remediation companies and those in my area say they do not work on cars. Thanks,Sam --- On Fri, 8/13/10, Jack Thrasher, Ph.D. <toxicologist1@...> wrote:It is possible that the contamination is coming from outside the car. However, it is most likely that the AC system is contaminated. Fungi and Actinomycetes have been demonstrated in the A.C. system of automobiles.
