I live in PA too and I hear the Autism services in NJ are top notch! (but I have no personal experience... To: autism-aspergers Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2012 2:59 PM Subject: Moving Maybe???

Hi Everybody,

It looks like we may move again. This time to New York or to New Jersey. How are services in those states? Any suggestion on how to research autism services for kids would be great.

I have a ten and 5 yr old, both with ASD. We get services here but I wonder how those states compare. I want to be able to explain to my husband the difference and what to take into account when moving out of PA. I thought most people moved here for the services.

Thanks,

I think that those other two states, unlike PA, do not automatically give children with dx of autism eligibility for medicaid. I think PA is only one of a handful of states that do qualify children with the diagnosis automatically without looking at their parent's income level. Depending on the level of your children needs, it may affect what you may have to pay out of pocket in terms of copay, medical supplies, drug costs, etc. I don't know about school systems in NJ, but I know that for EI (0 to 3 age), New Jersey requires parents to pay a certain portion of the therapy services depending on their income level, while in PA, that is never taken into as a factor. I met a parent from NJ who had to pay something out of pocket to get speech/aba services for her 2 year

old son, while I didn't have to for my son. I am sure for school system services, copay for school service is not an issue, but I know that NJ has one of the highest level of autism diagnosis in the country, so it may play a role in how much resources money wise you may be able to get for your child. If there is a lot of children who need services but limited state/federal funds (given the cuts that have and will probably take place under the local governor), it may make it more difficult. I know NY has also had some steep cuts in their local EI services and I am sure the school system is also facing similar cuts. Not that we are immune to that in PA, but at least medicaid covers wraparound services!Liliane To: "autism-aspergers " <autism-aspergers > Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2012 3:18 PM Subject: Re: Moving Maybe???

I live in NJ. My son was dx with ADS this year, (2 months into his first year of school). I wasn't sure how everything would go after the first meeting with the school. Everyone involved was great. I was really pleased and very surprised on how much progress he made over a 5 month period.

We had bought a house outside of the district before he was dx'd that we are in the process of reselling. That is how much we like the services he is getting from Evesham Twp. We do not want to take any chance of losing it by moving.

Hi,I moved from PA (sadly) six years ago to NY State. Mind you, we live in a semi-rural area, but his services are very poor. PA was excellent. We lived in Doylestown, PA and had great help. Now, near Kingston, NY, our county is said to have the worst services for special ed in the state. NJ is much, much better choice if you have a choice. I did a quick search online and found this:

http://autismbattle.com/autism-battle/autism-there-are-best-and-worst-states/

I don't endorse the blog/site or know anything about it, but the author goes

into some detail on how different states rank.

Good luck!

I have heard great things about Montclair, Millburn. Montclair has magnet program, where parents get to choose the school they like. Parents are very supportive and provide tons of information. Hope this helps!

I live in northern NJ, now Passaic county. Bergen County has great services through the YJCC in Washington Twp and West Bergen Mental Health in Ramsey and Ridgewood. I HATED the special services through my son's old school in Waldwick. Absolutely LOVE them in West Milford! I guess each town is different. :) Digges
