Guest guest
I actually found a private school in our small town that I wonder if it would be a better fit for our son. Downside is it is over $4,000 for the year! They do have financial assistance, but even with that, we couldn't afford anything. I just liked the idea that there was a very, very small class size (ratio is like 6:1) and the children actually " write " their own text books! Since my son is very artistic and loves to draw, that sounded like heaven to me. My dh didn't want him in the autistic class again this year, but until he learns more self-control (among other things), I really don't think we have any other options. We will begin working with a therapist this week (if she doesn't have another emergency and cancel again) and we will get to see a psychiatrist after a while (via webcam) to get our diagnosis! Yay! Been a LONG three years coming. Can you believe that I found this clinic on my own and purely by accident? After asking EVERYONE I could think of in the community for help on where to take him, NO ONE referred me to this place. I started cold calling places in the phone book. I am somewhat upset because according to the therapist, she works closely with the school district, but never did anyone mention this clinic when I would ask if they knew where we could go and get a diagnosis. She will be there to help them if he is in need (often he has a lot of trouble getting over things, sometimes it can take upwards of an hour to get him calmed down) and work with us here at home. I am optamistic that this will be what we need, but I am eager to get the diagnosis so I can have peace of mind (or is it piece of mind? my head has been hurting all day and I am having trouble staying focused!) that I am not crazy and imagining things. And from the posts the last few days, I now realize that my son is not the only one with anger issues and hating his brothers. I hope we can work on that, too. > > > Do a Google search for homeschool groups specific to your state, if you find one that's probably your best source for finding out what your compliance and notification requirements are. I don't belong to the Homeschool Legal Defense Association, but I think their website offers a breakdown of laws state by state also. Guest guest
I'm just curious, is it very common for parents to homeschool their Autistic children? I was homeschooled (I'm not autistic) and I know there's a lot of people who think homeschoolers are completely unsocialized and I can see how people would think that would be a bad place for a child with social difficulties to be. But also they could work at a good pace/schedule for the child. Is it easy to do? In the way of curriculum/laws. (I'm majoring in special ed/elem. ed and want to teach Autistic kids.) Guest guest
There is a whole community of homeschooling families affected by autism here in Northern Va. They have a list serve and the moms meet monthly and sometimes have outings with the kids. My son attends public school, but I " eavesdrop " on their list serve because they have great ideas and I may decide we need to home school one day.
