The main thing you want is someone with experience diagnosing

Aspergers.  You can't really rely on filling out forms and hoping

they give the right answer.  Someone who has seen a variety of kids

with AS will make a more accurate judgement.

Hi everyone,

does anyone have advice on what to look for in an

evaluation or the neuropyschologist for initial

consultation for suspected aspergers?  We hope to find

the right help and would be grateful to have feedback

from parents who have been there and done that.  The

consultation is end of September and I'll probably have

more questions then.

Thanks,

Do you ask over the phone how many kids with aspergers they see or have seen or is there some other way to find out how much experience they have? Thanks,ta. To: autism-aspergers Sent: Wednesday, August 1, 2012 2:48 AM Subject: Re: what type of help is best?

There is no harm in asking.  I doubt any psychologist is going to be

annoyed by you asking how much experience s/he has in this area.  I

found asking around other parents was a very good way of finding out

who not to see.  But don't write someone off just on one negative

review.  The first person I asked about my son's paediatrician told

me never to go there because she didn't know what she was doing.

The three parents who had taken their kids all highly recommended

her, and so we went.  We have seen no reason in the last 10 years to

change paediatricians.  My son turns 18 in November and we are

moving interstate in December, and one of our regrets is having to

find someone else to see him.  She has offered to see him twice a

year for a few more years if we fly in, but we probably won't do

that.

Is there some group where parents post reviews of the neuropsychologists/therapists they have seen in their area? I did get some names online but there weren't many reviews posted. I am not sure if there is a better resource for information on who to see in one's area. My pediatrician recommended someone but the doctor is a man and my husband and I thought our daughter would be more comfortable with a woman doctor.Thanks,ta. From:

Beware of virtually all diagnosis.  There is really only one - Autism.  I, and many others consider this a single continuum from the simplest ADD to non communicative autism.  The dividing line is brain damage, whether from mercury or aluminum, or physical.  Aspergers is nearer to the ADD/ADHD, but there are many INDIVIDUAL differences, so diagnosis doesn't do anything different in treatment, but it allows the MD to get paid by insurance.

If you want a treatment that is inexpensive because it has been proven effective and  can be done at home, check out a free lengthy article at: http://drbate.com/content/integrated.shtml

Brain damage? Really? My son had no physical damage and was tested very very young for the metals and nothing showed up.His brain works differently but no one (Drs) have ever said he was brain damaged. That's a new one!Sent from my iPhone

I hear you Lori, I don't like it when people refer to our kids as brain damaged? My oldest daughter had what was considered brain damage there is a big difference between brain damage and autism/aspergers in my opinion and experience. Our doctor who specializes in autism has never called it brain damage. To: "autism-aspergers " <autism-aspergers > Sent: Thursday, August 2, 2012 10:41 AM Subject: Re: Re: what type of help is best?
