It sounds like Sue needs to have her basement remediated. A dehumidifier will

reduce the moisture and food for mold, but if she already has a problem doesn't

she need to remove the offending critters carefully in order to straighten out

the air quality and then let the dehumdifier do it's job? Maybe the thing to do

is get a cheap unit and let it run in the basement while you move forward to

straightening out the problem and then replace it once the basement is cleaned?

I'm assuming that a dehumidifier in a previously moldy space would then be

contaminated itself?

This reminds me of something that I'd heard from a CIH who said that isometimes

dehumdifiers can collect and emit bacteria after a while? We regularly wipe down

the outside of the unit, vacuum it and remove the filter and clean it. Is that

enough?

It does make me concerned about continuous use of a dehumdifier say in an

enclosed space that is difficult to get to like a crawl space. I know that a

drain can be installed that removes the moisture collected, but what do you need

here to do maintenance? Is there a minimum time-frame for cleaning the unit in

an area that is hard to get to?

Thanks,Sam

Please Please remember that you never want to kill mold, removal is the only

option. If you try and kill mold, with ozone, UV light, bleach, disinfectant, or

EM1, it will cause the mold to fight back, and pump out toxin. Many people are

harmed when they try and do this. Cleaning with a product like Simple Green is

safe, it will wash away the spores without irritating them, after everything is

clean, you might apply a natural anti-mold product, like moldzyme, but even that

can be dangerous, because it is almost impossible to remove all the spores. I

would reccomend a dehumidifier in the basement. If it is kept dry ,if will not

mold.
