Guest guest
Autism HistoryAlthough most people accept that autism began with the 11 cases of Dr Kanner from the USA it may be that autism actually dates back a good deal earlier.Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler first introduced the term autism in 1911. Autism and autistic stem from the Greek word "autos," meaning self. The term autism originally referred to a basic disturbance in schizophrenia, in short, an extreme withdrawal of oneself from the fabric of social life, but not excluding oneself. http://pediatricservices.com/prof/prof-26.htm An article a long time ago talks of the word AUTISM coming from a European medical doctor (Swiss) in 1911 as part of the sub section of schizophrenia patients. The separation of autism from schizophrenia came around 1960.More recent authors have put autism back into the 19th century.I mention this as the early Kanner cases can be linked to mercury et al exposure. It would be interesting to see where the ealier Bleuler cases came from especially as Switzerland has chemicalindustries where exposures could occur. The loast part must have a significance which to me is unclearbut not excluding oneself.
