Comparing bivalent and quadrivalent HPV vaccines “Competing

interests: Vaccine was provided for CVT by GSK Biologicals, under a

clinical trials agreement with the National Cancer Institute (NCI). GSK

also provided support for aspects of the trial associated with regulatory

submission needs of the company under FDA BB-IND 7920. Lowy

and Schiller from NCI are named inventors on US government owned HPV

vaccine patents that are licensed to GSK and Merck, and so are entitled

to limited royalties as specified by federal law. None of the other

NCI and Costa Rica co-authors have any potential conflicts of interest to

report.”

Comment: The conflicts of interest between the US Government, US

governmental agencies and the pharmaceutical industry run deep. In this

instance, two researchers from the National Cancer Institute hold the

patent on the human papilloma viruses used to manufacture the adolescent

vaccines, Gardasil (Merck) and Cervarix (GSK). The National Cancer

Institute is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), one of 11

agencies that compose the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

The NCI, established under the National Cancer Institute Act of 1937, is

the Federal Government’s principal agency for cancer research and

training. The NCI is a tax payer funded agency. Therefore, U.S. citizens

have paid for the Research and Development (R & D) of the drug

companies, and yet, they charge citizens for their products AND Mr.Lowry

and Mr. Shiller get drug company royalties for helping make the vaccines.

How deeply the web is woven is a major concern.
